"The setup of the story is that California is forced to secede when it takes a principled stance to be a Sanctuary State after the President orders all immigrants be deported. So the starting point of the whole story is people doing the right thing and standing up to tyranny. The fact that the tyrants bring the hammer down in response is to be expected, but people’s resilience in fighting back should be inspiring. The book isn’t about wallowing in dystopia, it’s about celebrating the spirit of resistance."

On the bright side, I really liked the idea of Alexa-raven Livermore.

So there is one good thing to say about this mess.

So, is this like DMZ without Matty Roth?

Isn't like half of California as rural and conservative as the Deep South?

Geographically or populationwise?

Depends where you go. Orange County is home to churches who passed out lawn signs for Prop8 ten years back. And while I never encountered it personally when I went to CalArts, the surrounding neighborhood in Santa Clarita was rumored to be on the KKK side of things. I would think some of this sort would have moved out as the resistance increased with the plan to return when it was all settled. And in such a scenario, I think the world war 2 and Cold War facilities in the Santa Monica mountains would have been coopted by the resistance. I managed to get to the abandoned Nazi camp there before it got torn down last year.

Population-wise, maybe a third or so of California identifies as Republican, maybe a little more in times when they don't have someone like Trump dominating the party. Geographically, the state follows the same pattern much of the country does -- large, sparsely-populated rural areas tend to be Republican, while dense urban areas tend to be Democratic. Special note should go to Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area, which are the most densely-populated areas in the state, and also the most liberal.

For some good (if slightly out-of-date) maps of California's political geography, including ones weighted by population, check out the Public Policy Institute of California.

That's a matter of conjecture and how you measure, really. I had a coworker (a Texan, currently) who grew up in suburban California, who maintained that a CA Republican would be a Democrat in other places. From the 1950s to the 1990s, California was a solid Republican stronghold. The increasing Latino population has helped sway the state to the Democratic party. In terms of rural versus urban, it's a more complicated mix. Looking at the county-by-county level, while dense areas like SF and LA are solidly Democratic, other placers like San Diego are much more conservative. Few places are as conservative as the Deep South, tho, afaik.

Well, the inclusion of "NotSteve Bannon" already dates this comic, ironically enough.
