I realize the meta reason is to include everyone DC has published, but the inclusion of Sgt. Rock and the Haunted Tank crew, the Western heroes, or people like the Sea Devils, in the ginormous spread of heroes and villains fascinates me.
I mean, I get the Challengers. For them, the end of all creation is just a busy Tuesday. But what's Frank Rock going to do that an army of super-heroes and super-villains can't?
And how'd you like to be some lower tier "I have a ray gun and rob banks" type super-villain suddenly roped into this? I'd be pissing my pants.
I love the "where's Waldo" feel of the crowd scenes. They literally tried to pack in every character of any note whatsoever from the previous 50 years, and it shows. George Perez is a master of the infinite crowds.
And so many little touches. The Haunted Tank crew freaking out over Swamp Thing, Jemm usually being in the same panel as J'onn, all the different stretchy characters spreading out, and all the different facial expressions, ranging from dispair to heroic defiance to "what the hell am I even doing here?".
You're absolutely right, and furthermore, there's something sort of arrogant about the presumption that all the most capable foot soldiers in this battle for creation (which could be pulled from the past, present, and future, remember) are people we've already heard of.
I had a similar issue with DC ONE MILLION, which hypothesized that 833 CENTURIES from now, humanity will still exist and will STILL be celebrating the legacy of the Justice League more than any heroes who might have sprung up since.
King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table were great and all, but we weren't watching TV shows about them instead of Captain Picard and Mr. T in the Eighties.
Even still, I can't deny that it was an incredible thrill to see that huge crowd scene and, with the aid of WHO'S WHO IN THE DC UNIVERSE, be able to pick out everyone by name.
It's an interesting point... if Crisis was happening across all time points at once (explaining how they roped a lot of people into this thing, but don't get me started on how that makes ZERO sense...), there's probably a lot of people just off panel from other eras who we just didn't get to see.
Like how JLA/Avengers had a line about "I don't recognize those people!"/"They must be future members!".
Why do you see that as ridiculous? Jedi wasn't even two years old at the point this was written. Saying that is not that far off from making a 'Stranger Things' reference would be now.

Bottom line: If slash, feminism or anti-oppressive practice makes you react negatively, scans_daily is probably not for you.

Speaking of ridiculous... "Death Star squared"?
Maybe DC should've let their writers go outside a little more.
