You'd think CRISIS wouldn't need to inflate its body count, but not even one person is seen dying in this chapter, despite the title (some PP-influenced bystanders may have done the antimatter polar plunge, but that doesn't really count). I guess "3 EARTHS, 1 VAGINA" would've given the game away.

Not shown here or in the scans for #4 (and it's not a criticism when I say that, BTW: I know there's a lot to cover) is Supergirl's role as the voice of hope and reason, trying to rally an unusually depressed Batgirl and reach Captain Marvel when he's under PP's spell. CRISIS did a great job giving you feels about Supergirl before her death-- much better than it did for Barry Allen. The Silver Age's most stalwart creation spends most of his time in the series up to this point trying to flee, cowering, and crying. Sure, he does a lot of it under PP's influence too, but even so.

-"My God, I can't let my son die!"-

I get that this is a twelve issue long event designed to change everything forever, featuring damn near every character DC's ever made (except the Zoo Crew) and that even the best of writers would get a little frayed on some lines with a workload like that, but... all the same...
Seriously?

And that sequence is pretty repetitive as is. Did we need several pages of "they aren't acting like themselves, but WHY? What could POSSIBLY be doing this? It is such a mystery!"

Also, J'onn and Blok working together is funny simply because they're both wearing pirate boots.
Pirate boots team-up!

Maybe it wouldn't have been so necessary to shoehorn in "THAT'S MY SON DOWN THERE" if Hawkman and Northwind had acted like father and son one page prior, before the fight started, when it would've been easier to work it in...

I was like 12 when this series came out, so this was my introduction to SO MANY characters, like the Freedom Fighters, the Charlton heroes, and so on. It was fascinating and so epic. It blew my tiny little mind.

As cool as his design is, the Anti-Monitor's tusks will always look weird.

"You desecrate the flag!" says one man dressed in the flag to another man dressed in the flag. I know his emotions are being Pirated, but still, sense it does not make.

Also, sometimes Dr. Light sounds like Dr. Doom. "Fools! Cowards! I should just let you hordes of terrified civilians suicide-jump into this energy rift!" Like, is she just an arrogant jerk, or is she a morally bankrupt arrogant jerk of supervillainous proportions? It's hard to tell.

To be fair, Uncle Sam is the Living, Breathing Spirit of America, so he's got a more legitimate claim to the flag than some jock who's dressed in the colors because his grandfather wore them back in the Big One. The fact that America itself can have its emotions manipulated by a Pirate suggests some deeper meanings that Wolfman probably didn't want us to dwell on too much.

Dr. Light struck me as one of the more interesting characters for that very reason, someone with villainous leanings who was drafted into something whose sheer scale shattered her formidable ego until she became a true hero just to cope.

I didn't know much about Uncle Sam at the time, but didn't he more or less fill the Superman role for Earth-X? I'd expect Steel to be the one exclaiming in surprised pain there, not Sam.

Uncle Sam's powers vary wildly even by superhero comics standards, but you're right: he's more traditionally been shown as superhuman. I suppose if you were generous, you could say that since his powers come from America's best instincts, he can't access them when his emotions have been twisted like this.
