It only now really hits me how constant the gay jokes are in Preacher

In a way it fits with the semi, but not really, examination of masculinity in the story, but there is never really any clever payoffs for any of it.

It's pretty interesting how close Ennis comes to a genuine criticism of masculinity and gender inequality, but manages to stop just short of actually being sympathetic to feminism. Like you have this guy who's a male porn star who seems to be a thoughtful multifaceted character, then you have him accidentally killing a couple of female porn starts as this passing gag about fake boobs?

It comes off as very Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to me. Like there's a progressive side of this comic and a dudebro side of this comic and they're constantly fighting over the narrative.

It's a weird escalation from "the female liberal feminist pundit is just as flawed because she has a nose piercing" to this.
