An excellent story, but for some reason Beetle's membership on the team seems out of place. Was it ever explained why he was there, or was he just muscle?

I remember reading Thunderbolts, back in the day. Apparently Zemo sought out Abe, based on Egghead's recommendation. Good to have references, lol.

I'm pretty confident Beetle was "just muscle" back then. He really never got much of any character development until Thunderbolts.

Abe’s recruitment was definitely the odd man out, since all the other members came from the Avengers under siege crew. Granted, pretty much all the rest of that group were either dead, idiots, or too distinctively powered...

Actually, this Masters of Evil group came before that crew. And except for a few specialists like Fixer, Yellowjacket or Blackout, they were all muscle.

IIRC, Scorpion was a part of this crew as well, but was captured by She-Hulk and Hawkeye.

I guess Egghead cared less about genre and more about tactical use. A rare villain move :P

Kinda funny, now that I think of it. Tiger Shark has been a member of several Masters of Evil, but never once fought Namor as an Avenger. Heck, looking at this, Tiger Shark was a member of the Masters long before Namor was an Avenger.

You know, I have to comment, I had no idea Radioactive Man could just turn his radioactiveness on and off, and then go around in normal street clothes. I kind of thought he was one of those "always on" villains.

I think at the time most writers were really downplaying Jen's legal skills and were focusing more on her being a super hero. It's hard to say when writers started exploring that aspect of her life more, maybe during Byrne's run on Fantastic Four?

Byrne's I believe, yes.
I mean, it makes sense that Jen and Matt wouldn't necessarily be the lawyer of literally every single hero out there. But since that seems to be the case nowadays, it feels weird.

The thing that feels most weird isn't that Jen isn't representing him nearly so much as she's not commenting on the proceedings AT ALL. That's partly because her characterization at the time was much different (and arguably wouldn't be more than a one-note character until John Byrne made her one of his favorite characters, leading to the graphic novel and then FF membership).
