I don't think Christmas, as we've come to cherish it, has much to do with Christ. His teaching, His example, His life, His suffering, His death, burial, and resurrection. But, worse, I don't think Christmas has much to do with me, as a person, as an individual who has accepted certain teachings and embraced certain beliefs that run contrary to the notion of icy ladders and miles of gaudy flashing lights tacked around my rain gutters. There is no tree in my living room. There is no animatic Santa on my lawn. No wreaths, no reindeer. Just an ardent desire to not be made a target of those of you who do embrace all of this... activity... during these weeks. Christmas, each year, brings anxiety not over the joyous birth of our Lord and Savior (who was not born in December, but that's another rant), but of the unrelenting attack of well-meaning but deeply deluded folks who are bound and determined to bring Christmas to me. -- Christopher J. Possibly Halloween, there's a goodly amount of Christians who think of it as satanic. It just dosen't get the play time, because no one is propping up the war on Halloween as a political strawman.

Thanksgiving too, I've seen people who think of it as "the day we celebrate white people killing the indigenous population".

Valentine's Day tends to inspire a fair amount of backlash among people who *aren't* in a relationship.

But it doesn't have quite the cultural penetration of Christmas, so it doesn't get as much backlash.

Columbus Day is just about him showing up. Thanksgiving makes a big deal of Native Americans and Pilgrims being family and totally ignores everything that came afterward.

I'd argue that - while there is certainly hypocrisy involved* - the underlying message of Thanksgiving is a positive one.

*All the Indigenous American imagery around the holiday is in pretty poor taste.

Columbus Day is a celebration of a genicidal maniac who got lost and did neither the thing he set out to do nor the thing he gets credit for.

Well, there's also the imagery and presence of the holiday in this country's collective unconsciousness.

For Thanksgiving, you already mentioned it.

For Columbus Day, it's basically just an excuse for a day off work.

I don't begrudge Priest his feelings regarding Christmas. I guess I'd just say it's a weird choice to write a story for a Holiday Annual, then.
