informationgeek: (SheHulk)
[personal profile] informationgeek posting in [community profile] scans_daily
With Jennifer Walters, aka She-Hulk, getting back on her feet and returning to normal very easily, it's time to look towards the future. This time, it's for Marvel's newest relaunch, where she's getting a promotion to Avengers again!

Though... I have thoughts...

Jason Aaron is taking lead with Avengers #1 and is being backed by Ed McGuinness. We'll have the usual suspects on the team, people Marvel is trying to push like Carol, but most importantly to me, Jennifer Walters as She-Hulk!

....oh I'm sorry! I mean, she's going to be Hulk. Not She-Hulk. Nevermind the entire last arc of her latest series, but she's going to be Hulk. As IGN reports...

Even though Marvel just revealed that Bruce Banner will be returning to the land of the living in March after dying in Civil War II, Aaron wanted to keep Jennifer Walters as the Avengers’ Hulk for the sake of this story.

“You’ll see us playing with her powers a little bit, trying to differentiate her more from the Banner Hulk, and make her a more unique interesting version of the Hulk in her own right,” he said.

But she already is! Have you not been paying attention?!

Look, I like Jen and I'm glad to see she's getting back on the Avengers team, but I really don't have much faith in Aaron after how he wrote her in Thor and from this press release. I dunno, what do you all think?

I wouldn't bother with this whole thing until the next solicit gives some actual information (no matter how vague).

EDIT. My favorite reaction from twitter:

"Them: Get excited!
Us: For....?
Them: ....Stuff!"

good news is this looks like more of a "classic" avengers lineup

Bad news is not a lot of females and Ghost Rider seems a bit out of place tbh

GR's whole shtick is -riding- around finding supernatural strangeness. How much Riding is he going to do with the Avengers? This is like Spider-Man joining up: Fighting this kind of fight is outside his wheelhouse.

I love Dr. Strange, but he does not work as a team character. Leave him in his own book and have him consulted occasionally for advice.

T'Challa and Cap on the same team is a bit redundant, but I appreciate that Those In charge have requirements.

Why it Thor's Uru arm gold?

I guess he's coming along because he was in the big Legacy #1 book? Which was....sort of awful.

Yeah, not real thrilled about this line up. But not unexpected. The big three, a Hulk, and T'Challa and Carol to go with the movie slate.

But it seems very regressive in lieu of the very diverse line up of characters the adjectiveless, Uncanny, and New Avengers had.

I hope Ewing's got some team with a bunch of also-rans coming.

To clarify a point, by "regressive", I mean that it's (bar Robbie Reyes, and every writer gets to bring a pet character along) a very safe and traditional line-up. Jen's the only legacy character, there's (again, minus Robbie) no one who really falls into the "Why are THEY an Avenger" category, etc.

Yeah, definitely. Especially after losing Ewing's Ultimates/Ultimates2. Now that was a great team, and I loved the writing and art.

Great team, amazing book. I just hope Adam and Monica don't fade back into obscurity.

Oh, no, not Jason Aaron. No!

I like Jane-as-Thor, I like some of his mutant characters, but his tendency to make minor characters obnoxious through dialogue is over the top. Watching him try to apply his relatively ham-handed style to Avengers is going to be a letdown. Give it to Al Ewing instead.

Also, it's too soon to put Jen on a team with Carol.

There's a reason I always think of him as Jason "Strawman" Aaron.

To say nothing of Carol and Tony.

“Hey, Carol! Remember that time you beat me into a coma? Because I can’t. Because of brain damage. From the coma you beat me into.”

I love Jen and I liked Aaron's Jane/Thor but nooo, this is no good.

Marvel Comics will be kicking off a relaunch of almost their entire superhero comic book line this May....the return to legacy numbering done as part of last year’s Marvel Legacy relaunch will be going away. The new Avengers series will ship 18 times a year and be the single Avengers title going forward. For years Marvel has had multiple Avengers books that made up a sizable chunk of their publishing line -- New Avengers, Uncanny Avengers, Secret Avengers, etc. -- so this comes as a big change.

If true, that's so disappointing. What was the point of Legacy then?

The lineup includes the “Big Three” of the Avengers -- Thor Odinson, Steve Rogers, and Tony Stark -- united once more for the first time in years. In addition to the Big Three, the rest of the roster features Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes), Hulk (Jennifer Walters) and Doctor Strange, who will only be on the team for a limited time in a “rotating slot.”

Except for Jen and Robbie, those are all MCU characters too, and Robbie was in AoS.

For the Avengers, this means shifting between the present day Avengers and the prehistoric Avengers from 1,000,000 B.C. that were introduced by Aaron in last year’s Marvel Legacy #1.

OH, GREAT. Unless this has the best art ever, I'm not picking it up. I don't want an Avengers book that's more like MCU with a small lineup with white guys at the core.

"What was the point of Legacy then?"

Well it seems several titles, like Amazing Spider Man and Captain America, are coming up on landmark numbers so that's a good excuse for them to produce some oversized, likely over priced issues. The second was perhaps to add some legitimacy to some titles like She Hulk at a point where sales sucked. After the big comics ship they can go back to the tried and true tactic of releasing number ones again.

OMG, wait

http://comicbook.com/marvel/2018/02/20/marvel-fresh-start-legacy-numbering/

“Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be rolling out new beginnings for a few of our key franchises—new creative teams, new starting points, new storylines—all the big stuff that we’ve been building towards since Marvel Legacy began. This isn’t a clearing of the slate—while these new starts will kick off with new #1s, we’ll be maintaining the classic Legacy issue counts as dual numbering on these titles as well,” says SVP and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort.

The other thing I find fascinating is that NO ONE on this team is a member of one of the three current Avengers teams. That kind of suggests to me that No Surrender might end of a bit of a downer.
