"I told them we needed a point of view character: someone who could validate the fears and presumptions of white superhero fans who’d surely be reluctant to buy a 'black' book. I had sometime before created [Everett K. Ross], an attaché (i.e. diplomatic flunky/babysitter) over Ka-Zar and had modeled him roughly after Michael J. Fox and Matthew Perry. I thought somebody like that might make a great point of view character for Panther." - Christopher J. Priest

Which is difficult to create a comic around if you want to do narration. And it works out beautifully because he's still the man of few words mysterious badass while being the lead character.

"I'm standing here in underpants. This was never going to be one for the history books. But that didn't help."
