A scientist who wants to make a name for himself by A: exposing weres to the world, and B: figuring out just how it works, you mean? Presumably through a combination of observation and dissection. Yeah, that could be interesting, all right. And I agree, few things are more annoying than some smarty-pants writer trying to explain away creatures of ancient legend and folklore through the application of bad science. It carries 'there's a perfectly reasonable explanation for this' to the illogical extreme - any day now, I expect to come across a story where the Greek gods are revealed to be powerful robots or something.
