I love it when the Cenobites are depicted as flat lawful neutral like they are here. I also love these little "Even evil has standards" moments.
Also: I know you're drunk dude, but my response to this situation would not be "Who the fuck are you". It would be "AAAAAAAAAHHHHH" and then running away, slipping and falling down the stairs and most likely breaking my neck.
Chatterer's not that scary, at least with the simplified designs used here. He just looks like somebody who's had a terrible accident. Butterball and the Female have visibly sliced open bits, even here, and Pinhead has nails in his head...THEY would be the ones who freaked me out. (Movie-chatterer was scarier.)
Honestly it's kind of inconsistent. There's a bit in the second film where the human villain tries to get a young girl to open the box for him but Pinhead tells him " It is not hands that summon us. It is desire." but there have been cases where someone who doesn't know what they're doing opens the box and gets dragged to hell.
Plus I know in the last of these short Hellraiser stories that Cyberghostface posted, some scientists gave the box to a monkey to try and solve, but then when he does it doesn't do anything, so one of the scientists grabs it and solves it like "Nothings gonna happen." And then they all die and Pinhead pets the monkey and is like "Don't be afraid, this was never meant for you."
As I understand it, the only rule is solving the puzzle. If you complete it (and you start hearing music, as it's a music box) you hear the tolling of a bell from the Cenobite's dimension and a 'schism' is opened between the dimensions.
In Barker's material, they are primarily concerned with one thing, sensation (usually in the form of pain and torture) above all else. They make bargains (though the movie versions usually skew to trying to cheat on them, the novella version honors theirs). They are generally intended (by Barker, at least) to be amoral and alien. The movie versions tend to streamline them into straight evil monsters...and until this moment, I had no idea so many sequels had been made.
Theoretically anyone can, but very few will ever be able to. The puzzles respond to obsessive desire, REALLY obsessive (and usually kinky S&M) desire and tend to end up in the hands of those who are aware of what they are and what ther results of solving them will be... ie summoing the Cenobites who will transport them to concepts of pain and pleasure beyond anything human morality can conceive of.
Puzzle boxes like the Lament Configuration are one means, but we've seen many more in the comics; A jigsaw puzzle, a book of nursery rhymes etc...
the Scarlet Gospels was pretty good. Harry D'Morte is called by Pinhead to act as witness as Pinhead goes looking for Lucifer. all the Cenobites are now priests of the massive church system that rules Hell. like Bible hell, but there are a LOT of demons who are just regular folks. Good book, but really doesn't fit with the cosmology of the earlier works featuring the characters
