not sure I can buy Bane being the mastermind. Ra's sure, but Bane? not so much

Why? Bane was pretty much introduced as a genius from the start.

Bane was introduced as a refined, genius bruiser, though. He basically knew Batman's identity from the start and engineered a rather simple plan to take him down - make Batman exhaust himself completely fighting his entire rogue's gallery all in one night, and then beat him down when he returns home and neutralise him as a threat, with the main issue being that he didn't just outright kill Batman rather than breaking his back.

Though this has shifted away him being a mastermind type due to writers not really being sure what to do with him in most cases, but when someone does, like in this case? The results can be fantastic.
