Mod Post! Off-Topic Tuesday
Apr. 24th, 2018 11:44 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat amongst yourselves.
Technically, Net Neutrality in the USA ended on Monday 23rd April, the end of the 60 day consultation period, but it's unlikely that your ISP provider will do anything immediately because the negative PR would be impressive. But keep an eye out, as it's been speculated they'll wait a bit until you're not paying attention, then gradually up the ante... think... lobsters in pots of water slowly coming to the boil.
In (I'm sure completely unrelated) news the NTA has given its Charlton Heston Courage Award to Ajit Pai (I guess the inanimate carbon rod declined) for his brave decision, and presented him with a handmade Kentucky long gun.
A statue of Millicent Fawcett, one of the pioneer Sufragette's has been unveiled in London's Parliament Square, the first statue of a woman in that place, to celebrate 100 years of women in Britain getting the vote.
The UK has a new holder of the title "Fifth in line to the throne" as the Duke and Duchess of Kent welconme their third child, a boy, to the world.
The last 12 Toys'R'Us stores in the UK shut their sdoors for the last time today (the others closed over the past few days).
In one of those "genuinely sad, but still slightly restoring your faith in humanity" stories, a man who died whilst running the London Marathon at the weekend, and who had hoped to raise £2,500 for a local charity, has inspired donations to be made to the charity by members of the public in excess of £90,000.
Let us raise a bottle of maple syrup to James Shaw Jr, the unarmed man who wrestled the rifle out of the hands of a gunman (since arrested) who opened fire at a Waffle House restaurant in Nashville.
"Avengers: Infinity War" opens at the end of the week. Which will at least hopefully end the merciless, seemingly endless media coverage.
Is anyone watching "Krypton"? I can't seem to find anything in the way of actual coverage on it, it's not even garnering bad stuff like Inhumans did. Is it any good?

Date: 2018-04-24 11:20 am (UTC)In brighter news, those of you with a PS4 might want to check out the new demo of Detroit: Become Human. It's a little clunky to control, but I really love the interactive story style of it. It reminds me of those old Choose Your Own Adventure books :D

Date: 2018-04-24 11:35 am (UTC)1)There is still a massive court fight underway where over twenty states, free speech groups, and a coalition of video game companies are fighting the decision via lawsuit, and Pai's legal precedent to kill Net Neutrality is shaky at best, especially considering the public opinion period was obviously compromised by Anti Net Neutrality Spam bots flooding the comments section (of which Pai did nothing). So its pretty likely that the Cable companies wont do anything until the court things are settled since they don't want their hands in the cookie jar.
2) A number of states have already begun to make their own Net Neutrality laws (In spit of Pai saying that they couldn't do that when he wrote the repeal). For a few this is nothing more than a Executive order, but in some places like Washington and I think Vermont its been signed into actual law. The basic work around they are using that if Internet providers don't adhere with net neutrality, the state will not do business with them.
I always had a feeling that trying to protect Net Neutrality in the federal level was a waste of time as long as Trump and his cronies were in charge up there. I kept seeing all these "We only need one more vote in the senate to save Net Neutrality:" and just groaned and rolled my eyes because I knew that one vote was gonna have to be a Republican and we weren't getting it. No, Net Neutrality, for now at least, will be defended in the courts and the states. So you want to save Net Neutrality, call your State Attorney General or your Governor and tell them to get in on this.

Date: 2018-04-24 12:18 pm (UTC)We had another bunch of school walkouts protesting gun violence on Friday. Thankfully the Democrats responded with a bold new proposal. ... to legalize pot on the federal level. Thanks for having your finger on the pulse, guys.
Former First Lady Barbara Bush died last week. Regardless of how you feel about her, I sort of think the internet's reaction as a whole has been unbelievablely tacky.
There was another mass shooting over the weekend but I'm sure the gun people will point out that even more of our friends up north were just killed by a car.
But hey, the world isn't completely terrible because now twitter and youtube are full of cats playing with Nintendo Labo.

Date: 2018-04-24 12:28 pm (UTC)Last week, Miraculous Ladybug aired their Zombizou episode. It's not that they snuck stuff past the radar so much as hit the radar with a rocket launcher, with one pairing subtly confirmed by the creators. Which is cool because I adore those two characters together.

The first episode comes out tomorrow - because, you know, New Comic Book Day - and will tackle Scott McCloud's The Sculptor.
I THINK it's against the rules to make my own post for the video tomorrow.

Date: 2018-04-24 03:17 pm (UTC)Nominated for 9 BAFTAs, winner of 5.
It's a sort of mythological horror story about a Pictish woman with psychosis venturing into Helheim to rescue the soul of her lover. The team consulted with mental health professionals, people experiencing psychosis and voice hearers as they developed the character of Senua and her experience.
It is beautiful and horrible in equal measures. Definitely not for the faint of heart, but it is one of the best games I've played in years.

Date: 2018-04-24 06:49 pm (UTC)Also in the latest issues of Optimus Prime, something really quite unexpected happened. It also makes my head hurt when I think about it too much.
Not since Alice in Wonderland have I found something that captures perfectly what dreams feel like.
Date: 2018-04-24 07:24 pm (UTC)I really liked them both! The animation and designs were wonderful (especially with Lu and her Father), the characters were likeable, the soundtrack and animation was gorgeous and the adventures they went on a were a lot of fun to see. I think I slightly preferred the latter over the former, though, since I felt Walk On Girl had better pacing and the events never felt as disjointed as Lu could sometimes get, though Lu’s climax and ending did make me cry. I’d highly recommend them regardless, though they’re rather trippy and farcical on Shakespearean proportions: if you’re not fond of that kind of thing, then they might not be for you.
Also: apparently, The Night is Short, Walk On Girl has some connection to another series/book called Tatami Galaxy? What were they like, and what is the connection between them and the film/the book the film is based on?
