NS: Suicide Squad's Joker getting his own film

So fairly big news -- Variety has revealed that Jared Leto's Joker is getting his own spinoff. To clarify, this is NOT the same film as Scorsese's Joker origin film which is in its own continuity outside of the DCEU. 

Thoughts? Unlike a lot of people I don't hate Leto's Joker. If anything my main complaint was how little he was utilized in comparison to the main villains who were forgettable at best. That and I think the 'Damaged' tattoo and the capped teeth are pretty silly (but if Joker can get a new face after cutting it off hopefully it's not too much of a problem for a tattoo removal and some dental work). Acting-wise, however, I thought Leto was pretty decent with what little he had to work with. There's a lot of room for improvement but I think there's potential with the right director and script to do the Joker justice.

I'm surprised they actually got Leto back to play the Joker again, since apparently they cut most of his scenes from the Suicide Squad movie and he was kind of sore about it.

Of course, I imagine it would be hard to cut him out of a movie where he's the main star.

Okay. So, they take the thing most people disliked of SQ and decide to give it it's own film?
Yeah. Sound slike the DCEU.

Honestly? I have come to dislike Leto as a person, given what have been told of him. It could have the best cast in the history of the world, directed by Del Toro and written by Neil Gaiman and I would STILL not even bother go watch it.

That being said, I would like if the DCEU STOPPED announcing movies they are making.

I'm not sure there's a clear winner in the No Thanks category for Suicide Squad, there was so much about it that was just awful.

I liked Harley and Robbie is like opposite Leto, so I was very happy with the rumors of a possible Gotham Sirens movie.

Wonder if they'll use some of the footage they cut because it wasn't good enough to be in Suicide Squad. According to Leto they shot a ton of stuff that was never used.

Do not want. It just felt like one of the worst, most tone-deaf interpretations of the Joker imaginable, and I can't imagine a full film being much better.

But heck, I guess someone liked him.

The trouble with Jared Leto's Joker is that he wasn't as creepy as actual Jared Leto.

There's certainly more that could be said. That, for example, giving a spinoff to a largely reviled performance that had to be cut from Suicide Squad to try and salvage it is a perfect example of a white man failing upwards.

That mailing coworkers dead animals and used condoms is harassment, pure and simple, and that tolerating asshole behavior in the name of "genius" only creates the impression that being a genius and being an asshole are the same thing.

That Leto has been repeatedly accused of sexual assault. There's more to that, but does that really need to be said?

In conclusion, fuck Jared Leto.

While I remember wanting to see more of him just so I could form a better opinion of him, Joker should not headline his own movie. He's the bad guy.

So far the only thing the DC movies seem to have going for them at the moment is Shazam.

I'm really curious how exactly they'll miss up Shazam. I mean the whole Marvel Family is the antithesis of what DC is doing with their movies. There's a reason a lot of us assumed they'd skip him entirely and do the Black Adam movie instead.

It might depends if they go for a "Child's mind in an adult body" approach or "Shazam is basically his own person", and how much they play it for laughs.

It looks like it might be based on the New 52 story Johns did, since they also cast Billy's foster siblings from that arc (Darla, Eugene, and Pedro).

I'm happy about this. I found Leto's Joker interesting and wanted to see more of him. The capped teeth made sense to me as a master martial artist bodybuilder routinely punches him in the face, and the backstory behind the Damaged tattoo is pretty cool.

Looks like spin-offs are the latest trend on the big screen.

I honestly couldn't care less about this one, though. The Joker from Suicide Squad came across as a caricature of the character, which says something when it comes to a literal clown.

I never saw the film so I have no personal feelings on this either way, but I was under the impression that his version of the Joker was.... really unpopular? And I know that the film was panned overall. Odd choice.

I suppose the thinking is that panned or not, the movie made 3/4 of a billion dollars and Leto got the lion's share of the press coverage about a film that starred Will Smith and Margot Robbie. Whoever made the final decision must be of the "no such thing as bad publicity" mindset.
