Does this series end with him blackballed, unable to find work in America, and/or in jail?
Just saying, them's powerful words Snagglepuss is saying, but history tells us that it rarely ended well for those who got caught in the HUAC crossfire. :(
True, but reading this after re-reading Civil War makes me happy that someone at least got the right message out of history, and we need to show more moments of defiance against a corrupt and obscene overreach of power and expression of fear.
It is a more bittersweet ending. Five year after this, his career as a screenplay writer is dead and he is now completely alone, but he escaped jail.
However, like in history, the stonewall raid united the queer community more and, while he did not "win", his defiance showed the system COULD be fought.
Finally, Quickdraw(who was discovered and kicked out of the police, but found a new career as a cartoon character Roger Rabbit style), deeply regretted what happened to Huck and so he goes to offer Snagglepuss a work on TV.
Snagglepuss accepts the gig on the condition of giving a job to Huck's son Jr. (whose existence was hinted but now confirmed) as well.
Essentially, the series ends with the birth of the classic Hannah-barbera shows (snagglepuss is even painted orange, a reference to his first appearence ever) and the final revelation is that Classic!Huckleberry Hound was the son of the one we met in this series.
Kinda makes me wonder what would've happened if this comic got to cover all the old Hanna-Barbera characters, instead of just the "leftovers" after the big names like Scooby, the Flintstones, and even Dastardly & Muttley were snapped up.
Would the Flintstones, as the perfect embodiments of '50s American norms AND carrying a perfect refutation of the same (they're literal cavemen, after all), have been the Congressional prosecution? Or the leaders of an angry homophobic mob?
I don't know if I would call them "leftovers". Altough not nearly as popular as Scooby Doo or the Flintstones, These characters appeared in a lot of Hannah-Barbera shows and movies, even if mostly in a secondary role, right up till the end of Hannah-Barbera as a studio.
Given that Yogi Bear wasn't here at all, I do wonder if it wasn't a conscious decision from the creative team to focus on these specific characters and give them back the spotlight that had been taken away due to Yogi's popularity at the time.
I do dislike they call the shows "cartoons" despite them being actors. why? everything else doesn't imply that at all. I had assumed it was a Bojack Horseman kinda deal.
