This is going to sound bad, especially given how central Dark Sied seems to be to the DC verse, but I never got into the New Gods and Apokolips books as a kid. I have no idea what is going on with them. I only ever encountered DS and Big Barda when they interacted with Superman or Batman, so I am totally lost here.

What I guess I'm asking is: Can someone give me a quick primer on all this, please?

Quick primer: New Genesis and Apokolips used to be locked in an eternal war, until they finally negotiated an uneasy truce. As part of the pact, both rulers, Highfather and Darkseid, would each give their infant son to the other to raise, as sort of a mutual hostage situation. And so the son of Highfather, Scott Free AKA Mr. Miracle, was raised in Apokalips in Granny Goodness' orphanage, subject to all manner of abuse.

He and Big Barda, one of Darkseid's military elite, fell in love, and after years of indoctrination and torture and so on, were both able to escape to Earth and begin a new life together. This nullified the pact and restarted the war. In the events of this comic, Highfather has died and Scott has inherited the throne, and has been drawn back to Apokalips in order to try and renegotiate terms.
