While shifting through the ruble, after the Daily Bugle is attacked by the Jackal and Spidercide, Ewing finds a file that had been hidden in the wall, containing a bank deposit key and various documents on superheroes.


Ben Urich explains more about Garner to Ewing.


Garner told Jameson that the truth would kill him. Afterwards Garner began to disappeared for weeks at a time, claiming he was working undercover. Eventually ten years ago he vanished for good.
After checking Garners claims, Ewing finds nothing, and is ready to dismiss the whole thing

Control was established to ensure an acceptable future, and to harness the wonders of the modern age. It was Control who contained Fing Fang Foom, ZZutk, and other such creatures, hiding them from the public and sending them to Monster Island.

The figure asks Ewing what he's going to do with this information, then walks away.

Ewing arrives at his apartment and meets Monique, who wants to talk to him after the argument they had. He gives her his keys, and tells her he'll be up soon. Then the apartment building explodes.

Ewing realizes that finding and exposing the truth is his best chance of staying alive. He travels to the abandoned town of Punios Verdes (left a ghost town after the Hulk rampaged through it), and uses the key to unlock a deposit box.
This causes a flashbang to go off,and then a figure knocks him out.


Garner takes Ewing to the Hulk's first base, which was used and abandoned by by Control.



Then the bases alarms start to go off. SHIELD is coming for them.

I will say that it's an interesting premise, to link all of those early scientific accidents and breakthroughs and try and establish common ground. When you really think about it, the early Marvel Universe was just one accident after another. Gamma bomb tests, radioactive spiders, cosmic rays, toxic waste, atomic leaks, explosions... yeah, -we- know it was because those are cheap and easy comic book origins, but it makes sense to try and establish some sort of common ground to help explain them.

Either that, or there were literally no safety concerns or standards.

On the other hand, when you try to say that everything was the result of a conspiracy, it really lends a more cynical feel to the universe which I don't necessarily like.

In a cut page, Trenchcoat Guy not-so-subtly implies he's Loki just stirring up shit for the lulz, which firmly leaves this mini in as-canon-as-you-want-it-to-be territory.

Yep that's right. He says "I could be a trickster god", with a few other lines imply the same. He also seems to only care about what Ewing will do with the information.

I read this when it came out, but I wasn't sure if it was a "take" on "The X-Files + Superheroes" or a superhero universe version of an Oliver Stone movie.
