Surprise comic book wedding!
Aug. 16th, 2018 09:02 pmIn the era of leaked surprises and long trailed storylines, it's always good to see a surprise in comics, especially a surprise wedding.
In fact, this was such a surprise, I'm not even going to tell you what it was until you open the cut
In Thor #3, Balder the Brave (current King of Hel) and Hela (former Queen of Hel) decide that rather than fight each other for the right to the throne of Hel, they should get married.

Except...

But when did Thanos and Hela hook up? That was in Unworthy Thor #5

In Thor #4, Thanos tells the wedding party that Hela would "tear [Baldur] apart".

The Queen of Cinders attacks, Thanos tells Hela that "we need to talk"

Getting back with an ex. Classic dick move.
With the help of Thor and the Valkyries, the armies of Niffleheim see off Sindr and her forces. Sindr escapes through the Black Bifrost, and there's still a wedding to complete.

Loki's wedding present to Karnilla is to send Balder back to the realm of the living.

Yep. Thor #4 had two women marrying each other, as not seen in the New York Times

Date: 2018-08-16 09:37 pm (UTC)Also.... Karnilla and Hela together just seems like an excuse to gather the universe's greatest hats in one place.

Date: 2018-08-16 09:22 pm (UTC)Okay, I am going to be fair and admit that this is not too different from your typical political marriage and it's, like, half the marriages in Game of Thrones (the other half don't reach the honeymoon...). So I guess there is an argument to be said that this is a step in expanding the scope of stories involving equal marriage
But... it is a wedding in which one of the brides is CLEARLY not into this idea and is doing so sacrificing her own happiness. It MAY lead to something good but right now and... I am not comfortable with calling this "two women marrying each other"...

Date: 2018-08-17 02:37 am (UTC)Also, Balder was great as written by Walt Simonson. It's other people's fault for not being as good a writer.

Though I always forget that Tyr and Balder are bros as well.

Date: 2018-08-17 04:06 am (UTC)In the Thor movies I think there are two characters who are noticably absent. One of them is Balder the Brave (the other is Amora the Enchantress but that's beside the point).
Then I remembered that the plot revolves around Odin not wanting to give power to either son because one is evil and the other is an idiot. Dropping Balder into the movies would have resolved about half the conficts in that series.
Simonson' Balder may have been fighting some major PTSD but he still got stuff done.
What's Angela actually done?
Also, while mythical Tyr is pretty badass, I can't say I've ever been interested in comic Try.

Date: 2018-08-17 06:51 pm (UTC)I think it is because the rug gets pulled out from under everything awesome before it gets time to shine. Everything is too quick. And the art is not my thing really.
Balder as the King of Hel? Awesome. The Black Sun, burning away the mists of Helheim. Maybe getting to develop some power of his own now that he has a realm of his own.
King Balder and his sidekick Tyr, driving around in his hog, visiting dead relatives and seeing his kingdom? Awesome!
But they are all gone before they get to shine, returning us to an old status quo.
*sigh*
