He took a girl for a joyride in the Batmobile if I remember rightly. Damian seems to be one of those boys who enjoys chasing girls around the playground trying to kiss them, or would do if he didn't think such actions to be beneath him.
Batcookies pointed out the logic before, but I can't find it. Basically, Talia would have had to met Bruce several times before she conceived Damian, right? And Dick was Nightwing when Bruce met Talia, right? And when did Dick become Nightwing? Not a decade ago.
Are you sure? I dunno how the sliding time-scale's changed it, but Talia debuted in '71, while Dick hadn't become Nightwing until '84. Sure, the Son Of The Demon one-shot that inspired Damian was in '87, but it wasn't really considered in continuity, so Damian's birth could easily work it's way between the two.
DC has two easy exits here. One is the flexibility of comic-book time. The other is that Ra's al Ghul and Talia have established links to cloning, body-switching, accelerated growth, and other phenomena that could, if need be, explain Damian's appearance.
I like Dick using Hush for his own ends to benefit Gotham, though surely rather than the Outsiders, he'd have been more effective if he'd simply appointed Selina Kyle as one of the "special committee", Hush has good reason to fear her.
And for pities sake, work out how old Damien is supposed to be acting DC writer guys. He's what, 9 in "Batman"? Here he's interested in girls already and has the face of an adolescent?
I think if they tried Selina on him, he'd just try to kill her.
And he's 10, according to Morrison--though I really can't imagine the adolescent who's trained to be an assassin since he was a zygot having a fear of cooties.
But if he tries to kill her, that spoils HIS fun at the expense of Bruce Wayne.
And it's not the fear of cooties, but the fact he'd actually HAVE an active interest in dating someone at age 10 which just plain doesn't work, nor does suggesting someone who looks like that is 10.
Some people are wired. In fourth grade (around 10, right?) all my little classmates lost their cool about who was going with who to a school dance. No, I'm not kidding. Never mind these "relationships" lasted all of 10min and there were both parents and toddlers at the "school dance"; the class still exploded into drama Gossip Girl would envy.
Add to the fact that the squirt is probably trying to mess with Dick's head... and you have one creepy little 10 year old.
Hey, you're seeing your idea for how Dick should have replied to Blockbuster played out here.
In a Newsarama interview (http://www.newsarama.com/comics/060904-Grant-Batman.html), Grant Morrison referred to Damian as "probably the best 10-year old fighter on the planet."
Yeah, I noticed that part. It would've been cooler if there were some Titans instead of just the Outsiders and some JLAers, since this really plays it more about Bruce's friends coming out to back them up than Dick displaying his qualities as the guy with the most friends in the DCU.
The only way it makes sense to me is that it's like everything else about Damian's view of himself--completely disconnected to reality. Like he's talking as if he could actually date this woman and wants to, but really it's just insane, like an extreme form of pretend. Like him saying he could be Batman now. Like he thinks he's sounding grown-up but really he's just showing he's a child.
I mean, I can easily imagine Dick developing a crush at this age--but he would have done it in an age appropriate way.
But if you can get Zatanna to help scare Hush, surely you can also get her to say "Kool ekil Ecurb Enyaw" in order to prepare somebody more trustworthy for the role?
New rules of magic. It would. Um. Actually, I don't know. Mess up someone else's face or something? That and I don't think you'd have a lot of volunteers with either the time, the acting ability, or the faith in Zatanna and magic in general. You could always hire an actor, but then you'd have to explain why this whole thing is necessary. If Hush weren't here, though, I can see Dick exploring that route eventually.
One of the reasons this plot doesn't make any sense is that even if Dick thinks Gotham needs a "Bruce Wayne" there is no way it should be Tommy Elliot. It was just awhile ago he cut out Catwoman's heart (and Zatanna was part of that storyline for goodness sake), in addition to all the other sick things he's done. He's a medical genius who's thrown everything away just to pursue a childish vendetta against Bruce Wayne even to the extent of looking like him and giving away his fortune. And Bruce's friends are COOL WITH THAT? As long as he runs it by Wayne Execs?
Even if Zatanna had a moral problem making someone else look like Bruce Wayne couldn't she go "Erotser Samoht Toille Ecaf" and end this farce. After mindwiping him, apologizing with promises to make it up to him (in JLA) and being quasi-in-love with him, one would think Zee would be the first to volunteer to avenge Bruce.
The problem I have with any story which uses the fact that Dick is well-connected is that it reminds me of a certain other story about a villain who said he was going to kill off all of Dick's friends.
Yes, that's right; bad writing has ruined good writing for me.
Hey Damian! You know who else is reminds me of Katana and is younger? Cassandra Cain!! Too bad DC don't like her, so you'll never get to even to see her!
Hush is...not annoying. Damien is...kinda entertaining. Dick is COMPETENT and PERFECTLY in character.
I never quite understood what the huge fuss about Dini was before, but now I love him with a fire of a thousand suns.
Now, if they would only have the good sense to keep Winnick writing Batman, since he seems to be doing a fair job of it, and Batgirl seems off to an auspicious start, I MAY start picking up the Batbooks again. *sigh*
Damien is fun in small doses, but he does veer into 'irritating little shit' every now and again. I'd much prefer Dick to be working with Tim.
I hate Damien, but much as I hate to admit it, Tim is too old now to continue being a virgin sidekick. He's about nineteen - at that age Dick had already adopted his Nightwing persona. I'm glad he wants to get out of the shadow of his mentor and his brother but I just wish it didn't come at the expense of his close relationship with Dick. Not to mention, Tim can also occasionally behave like an irritating little shit since OYL.
All the same, I just wish we could have seen Dick at least being torn up and angsty about being ditched by his little brother. Before that point, they really were closer to each other than they were to anyone else. *sigh*
But I hold that if anyone can make me reconciled to Damien, it's Dini.
Dick's brain isn't working. The cowl must be too tight.
Gotham doesn't need Bruce Wayne, it needs someone to keep Bruce's legacy going. And if Bruce is declared dead, then who becomes King of Gotham? Oh yeah, Dick Grayson.
He can do the same things Bruce did, support the same charities and philanthropic projects, only he'd not have to worry about Hush screwing things up and trying to ruin them.
I love Damian when he tries to be threatening...while dressed in bright primary colours. Look at his little costume! How can you hate somebody who wears that adorkable costume?
Also, it makes sense that he's into romance already. Look at his parents! Hairy-chested love-god for a father & Talia Al Ghul for a mother, who can make "I'm going to kill you now" sound like a come-on.
