What’s quite interesting is that some people will find specific contemporary reference and relevance where none was intended. [...] Now: it would’ve been really easy to make this into a thinly veiled comment on the Trump presidency. And, hilariously, readers on both sides of the political spectrum have made that assumption. I mean, it's already pretty fashionable to compare this era to the Weimar Republic, so I'm not sure that's a new observation. "You thought was Trump, but was actually Hitler! Bamboozled again."

Yeah, TBH that smacked a little of disingenuousness to me. "Oh, you thought it was based this era facing the problems of political extremism and instability? No no no, you silly person, it was actually based on another era facing the problems of political extremism and instability to which it's often compared! Oh, how foolish of you. (by the way, did you pick up on how the two eras are kinda similar? Huh, did ya?)"
