The art really improved in this issue! When they get a decent artist, it actually doesn't seem like a bad story. Though I could do without the hero monologuing about how wonderful they are. Comes across as a bit narcissistic. Not Spider-Man narcissistic, but still bad.
Sometimes, yeah. It really depends on the story. When he actually takes stuff seriously, he comes across as a mature adult. When he cracks jokes regardless of the danger, he comes across as completely arrogant. Like in Civil War, he flips between sides, and is cracking jokes when he's beating up the guys he used to team up with. It makes him look like an insensitive oaf.
So the art on this is gorgeous. But the exposition on that first page? It's like someone forgot just how words are supposed to sound and is trying their best to fake it. I wish I could go back in time and help Rivera figure out how to convey the information without it feeling like a stilted monologue. :(
