Any accusation that the Grimm's collection were the softer cuddlier version of fairy tales must deal with the fact that they included "The Children Who Played at Slaughter," where goddamn everyone winds up dead.
As far as this rendition of Hansel and Gretel, Hansel actually dying is perhaps a bit of a dark turn, but did they leave in the bit in the beginning where their father goes "Due to widespread economic devastation, I'm going to take you out into the woods and abandon you to starve to death,"?
The implication seems to be that the witch, who casually murdered for food, is now helping runaways change their minds Why the change of heart? (Sorry Hansel, no pun intended)
Or is it supposed to be someone else and the artist lack of variation is showing through?
I think it's meant to be the university professor Dr Sela Mathers from the previous issue. Apparently in the series she recounts fairy tales to people, to try and get them to change their ways.
I was also confused if it was meant to be her, but Comicvine says it is.
I also found this on the wiki. "Also It should be noted that the witch in this story shares Sela's name and the Zenescope team reveals that initially the reflection of Sela in the mirror at the end was supposed to show her looking like the witch. Clearly they decided to go a different way."
