I don't know, I think this was the strong early favorite to win and completely deservedly so.
What I'm still shocked by was that the Green Book won the Best Picture Oscar and best Original Screenplay considering the recent discussion surrounding it.
I'm not sure where the info comes from that "most" Academy voters vote without watching the films they vote on, animated or otherwise, but I'd take it with a grain of salt, especially because the voting body has changed a lot since 2015.
I think it's a more valid theory that name recognition tends to sway even the conscientious voter. You may watch all the nominees, but you can't really get away from the excited marketing and social-media chatter about Up or Coco or, yes, Spider-Verse, and that can give it a first-mover advantage over films like Mirai.
(also, I'm sure Mahershala Ali's participation did not hurt)
“I'm not sure where the info comes from that "most" Academy voters vote without watching the films they vote on, animated or otherwise, ”
There have been numerous anonymous Oscar voters who have said as much to places like Hollywood Reporter. When it comes to animated several have said they don’t care about animated films and just vote for whatever Disney does.
In practice it is still the same thing. It's still suspicious how consistently Disney/Pixar wins the "Animated Feature" Oscar. It is still suspicious how the previous non-Disney movie to win the prize was Rango in 2011. It's still a suspicious trend that feels in-line with animation as a whole being considered "lesser" and most people taking Disney as the end-all of animation (and I am saying this as a huge Disney fan)
It was a great win... sadly doesn't make Green Book winning for Best Picture any good. Besides it being Driving Miss Daisy, its director flashing his gentials at woman, its writer engaging in Islamophobia, and the family of the pianist calling the film incredibly inaccurate, its just a blah, unremarkable film. It's just forgettable compared to the other nominees.
Into the Spider-verse should have been nominated for Best Pic.
Well done to them! Though I still wish it wasn't all about multiple universes. That and time travel are the two biggest things which instantly kill my interest in any story. A shame, as the movie looks really beautiful.
I can only speak for myself, and I understand if you feel differently, but the presence of multiple universes makes the characters and their lives utterly worthless. You have a character who's had a lot of pain and a lot of trials, who has this whole beautiful history - but it doesn't matter, because in another universe they're a robot or have tentacles or got turned into a pig by a wizard or God knows what. Ignoring how complicated it makes stories, it makes the characters I love feel less special because nothing has any consequence. Their entire lives are merely one possibility out of an infinite number, which renders their entire existence just some kind of cruel joke, really.
The way I look at things, there's still only one of your universe – sure, there may be one that looks, smells, tastes, sounds and feels the same with maybe one or two minute differences, but by this logic your Universe is one-of-a-kind, because there are still no other Universe with the same variables as the one we're in. Even if that might not matter to you, that matters to them.
I think the multiverse storyline is integral, doesn't come across as tacked on and really helps to enhance the film in many ways – particularly in theme of how anyone be Spider-Man. You can be a teenager, a child, an adult, happy, depressed, rich, poor, black, white, American, Japanese, male, female, human or even a cartoon pig, whether in the past, present or future; if you have the power and responsibility to do good, then Spider-Man is in all of us and is all of us.
The technical guys loved it, and that makes a big difference no matter what anybody says. It was a great technical achievement, blending a lot of new techniques in many ways. The Academy has always rewarded movies that break new ground in technical matters.
And I think that this year the Academy was wanting to send a message about racism and inclusivity, which made them step outside the usual boundaries. Plus the absence from the scene of one of the usual fixers, Harv, must have made a major difference. Green Book, yeah it is superficial, but a lot of people in the Anglosphere (not just America) have superficial as a step up from their (our? I'm including myself in that, I think, I could be better. I'm trying to be better and learn more) ground state of awareness.
Shock of the night was Colman winning Best Actress. It was all set for Glenn Close's long overdue coronation and you could see the shock of everyone (especially Colman) when her name was called out instead.

I think (or at least hope) you still might like the film even in spite (or perhaps because) of that
