Of course, there are definitely dark times in the Skywalker/Solo family in the EU as well. But at least we got to SEE the GOOD times, post-ROTJ as well.
The later. There's an infamous book scene in which Leia's third kid describes Mara Jade's appearance in gushing detail. There's even a long-running fan theory that Luke and Mara's son Ben was really fathered by Luke's nephew (who would have been 16 at the time).
It's nonsense, but that's Star Wars for you. The fandom reads incest subtext and daddy drama into everything, not unreasonably.
As someone who has only touched the tip of the iceber that is the Old Star Wars canon (and even then, that's mostly KOTOR stuff and a few general things such as the fact Luke had a wife named mara), I want to say: this was complete gibberish to me. I had no idea who most of the characters are or the things they were referencing(I confused characters with Han or Leia at least 5 times).
Of course, that's because this is supposed to be a huge deal within the tapestry of the old EU, so of course it is so reference heavy. in that way, It was like reading a modern X-men book...
Of its any consolation, when someone asked Mark Hamill at a Con about how he felt about Luke being a widower (when Mara died some time after this), he had to reply that he had no idea Luke was even married, as he didn't follow the SWEU at all.
I can see their point though. Why buy a hugely successful series of six films and a cartoon series, to allow yourself to be hamstring by a series of books with comparatively little public saturation?
To appease hardcore Star Wars fans, and maintaining your core fanbase. The general public wouldn't notice the difference between the Yuuzhan Vong, or the First Order, so why not make the appeasement of your longtime fans priority? It didn't have to be a beat by beat rip of the EU, but they could have drawn inspiration from it, like the MCU does.
