Is anyone else getting huge Taxi Driver vibes from this movie? I have to say, it's a bold move, and fits more with the characterisation of The Joker as a bitter misanthrope rather than a goofy jerk doing everything for shock value.
Honestly, it's probably one of the most unique looking comic book movies I've seen in a very long time, so I actually have high hopes for it.

"most unique"

Most unique? Most unique?

See, I think that is what drove the Joker to madness. People putting modifiers on absolute stakes. Unleash the fox!

Joker over-exposure aside, I am cautiously optimistic. Lookwise, Phoenix looks closer to what I think Joker should look like than... say... the one in suicide squad.

I also got a few Heath Ledger flashbacks. Not so much Jack Nicholson. altough his makeup reminded me a little of Cesar Romero. Cameron Monaghan I am sorry to say I don't know enough to compare him while Mark Hamill is a beast of it's own.

Honestly?
I kept getting a Robin Williams vibe from this... Now I'd love to have seen what he could have done with the role. I wonder if he was an influence at all...

my only issue is that I think it would be heart-shattering to see Robin Williams as the joker. though that probably means he should have been Joker at some point...

I'm looking forward to it. Not looking forward to morality debates and debates over if they should include Harley in a sequel.

Absolutely loved the trailer and just the ever-increasing sense of menace in it. Have no idea how the timeline works, but at the moment don't even care.

As a sidenote, and I know this shouldn't even surprise me at this point, but I was kind of taken back at another site how many of the comments weree against the movie in principle and did not even discuss the trailer. Like nobody is forcing you to pay attention to this project.

I think it's because no one wanted this project to begin with. If you ask me, I think everyone is still waiting for DC/WB to fix Supes, and Bats, so projects like this tend to draw a level of resentment from the fans.

Again, nobody is forcing anyone watch this trailer or pay any attention to it. And as mentioned, this is a low budge side film that probably will have no impact on the WB side.

So no falling into a vat of chemicals in this? and how old is this Joker going to be when he meets Batman?

The fresh approach to the character's makeup and to his pre-Joker appearance is welcome. I'm not sure we need yet another "poor, picked-on, hard luck woobie" supervillain origin story, though. While I'm definitely not among those who think the Nolan/Ledger take was the "only true" or even "best" Joker in any medium, I did like that The Dark Knight didn't bother giving him a "troubled, sympathetic past" and instead focused on his twisted motivation in the present.

Yea - sort of burned out on "he's suffered so much - he just was driven to this - CUE SYMPATHY" narratives. I feel we need to STOP that. For a bit. Or at least give us something other than suffering murderous white men.

Also - sort of ...currently not feeling the "othering" of someone with actual mental issues. Though that's speaking as someone who deals with depression and anxiety. I prefer when the Joker just IS - and we don't try to pin him to actual mental issues. Less way to make him comparable or similar to people IRL who need or want help.

Agreed. I had similar misgivings when Family Guy did an episode in which we learn Peter isn't merely stupid but intellectually disabled (the show used the obsolete term "mentally retarded"). Even though this was back when I still usually found the show funny (as opposed to the tediously mean-spirited anti-humour series it became), I was never able to enjoy Peter's antics anywhere near as much as I used to, once they linked his low intelligence to a real-life disability for which it'd be unspeakably cruel to laugh at real people.

I tend to agree, but if this version of the Joker manages to make him look like the pathetic and broken guy he really is instead of the "Teh evulz is kool" guy from some of the more recent films then it might be worth it. Just to get rid of some of the more obnoxiously visible villain-worshipping nihilistic fanboys.

I'm not sure the Joker needs a movie focussing on his background and motivations, but if you're going to do it you might as well make it it's own thing, and this certainly seems to be intent on doing something different.

I'm just not sure I'm interested, which is my issue, not the movie's I know.

I'd actually be interested in this movie, for its 1970s in New York City vibe.
