I very deliberately wrote a Post-Nextwave Monica instead of Nextwave Monica, precisely because it was time to move on. Bringing Nextwave into a form of "continuity" was a way of metabolizing it, so it needn't hang over those characters forever. (Warren's a big influence for me in terms of his ability to cut to the heart of a character or concept, find The Thing That Makes It Cool, and then present that simply and with style.) -- Al Ewing

Man I love Ewing. Just look at this scene with Hawkeye. He makes it look so easy. He meshes classic WCA Leader-Hawkeye with the current version so well. I can see versions of the character in this take, and it's beautiful.

And Hawkeye trash talking Hulk, DEVIL HULK, to his face? That is classic Hawkeye right there.

Seriously, I think Ewing could make me read X-Men and appreciate it, he's so damned good at his job.

Oh man Ewing on X-men? That would be an amazing next act after he is finished showing the Avengers his love.

Yeah, at this point I think Clint has A) Used up all the remorse he had for plugging Banner back in Civil War II, and B) is entirely fed up with Devil Hulk's shit.

Hopefully we see more of classic Clint now that Bendis is gone. Aside from Fraction and Ewing*, I've hated pretty much everything they've done to him Post-Thunderbolts.

*And that run in Slott's She Hulk ... though that was literally a time-displaced classic Hawkeye in the modern Marvel.

As long as he treats Monica right and doesn't crush my dreams of a NEXTWAVE movie and/or prestige cable series, he can do what he wants.

Ewing's Monica has been amazing these past few years

It's a shame that there haven't been other writers who have given her even a fraction of this love these past few years

It's a problem Ewing shares with Ellis. They both write amazing characters and make it look easy and then lesser hacks come along, read it, and go "Oh, that's easy, I can do that!" and proceed to completely and utterly miss the point.

Post-Ellis Authority is a good example.

He clearly wanted someone who wouldn't overshadow him ;)

You know, the cool effect of doing an everyday objects percussion ensemble is spoiled a little bit if you then put a nondiegetic instrumental track over the top of it.

I'd rather other writers keeps their hands off so she's written well whenever she appears.

What if some hypothetical other writer comes along and wants to use her in an interesting, well-written way that's respectful to her prior appearances?

I'd still worry about dissonance with the way she's being written in Ewing's books, even if it were just a different take rather than a less well-written one. Maybe the hypothetical writer could do something with Jennifer Walters instead? The more dissonance with Aaron's take on the character, the better.

Monica needs a long-running solo and I don't think Ewing has room in the schedule for that.

I wonder if Monica being "hard" has to do with her being a harbor patrol cop before she became a superhero.

Also, being in Nextwave would make anyone "hard."

Heck, just being near Nextwave would make anyone hard.

Ahem.

Am I reading this right? Did Monica really trick Nyx into killing her own children? Because that's pretty damn dark (no pun intended).

To be fair, when she swapped the twins' appearance with that of Hercules and the Vision, she didn't know Nyx was going to make with the disintegration zap. If the latter had been merciful, her kids probably would have survived.

Props to the writers for that - tricking someone into murdering their own children is exactly the sort of thing to pop up in a Greek myth.

(Though Monica specifically says she wasn't expecting Nyx to make with murder, and would have stopped it if she could have)
