Yeah, the World Devastators were my favorite of the post-RotJ Imperial Superweapons for exactly that reason. And the oft-forgotten Galaxy Gun from Dark Empire 2 was literally the exact same idea as Starkiller Base, just stripped down to a much smaller form (and not being an actually planet).

So yeah, anybody who simultaneously bitches about the loss of the old EU while decrying Episode 7 as derivative is being more than a wee bit hypocritical.
