Yep, the movie did improve by cutting down on the worst parts of the comic.
Still a debate on whether or not the "Big Daddy just a fanboy" thing was worse or not by being cut. Some think it's better for the movie to play the ex-cop thing for real but others think it makes it too cliche while the idea of him just a pathetic fanboy who turned his daughter into a psycho murderer was better.
I remember when this was considered the shit back when it was first published. There was a genuine atmosphere of 'Whoa duuuuuude!' at this comic's edginess if I recall. Now edgy ultraviolet comics attempting to commentate on either superheroes or the nature of escapist violence are dime a dozen nowadays and a big chunk of them are written by Mark Millar himself so it hindsight it's kinda dumb.
Also, one thing that I think is super pathetic is the entire 'beard' subplot with Katie, where his false pretense friendship with her is played off as seemingly sincere and incredibly tender. But it seems pretty clear to me that the comic thinks that Dave is pathetic for being in that situation instead of thinking him pathetic for being a Nice Guy who can only perceive as companionship with the opposite sex as a good thing if it involves getting laid.
As someone else noted in earlier issues, it hurts that MIllar is trying to say "this is how real life would work" and then has a ten-year old girl easily slaughtering adult males who outweigh her by 300 pounds.
I don't doubt you that some folks thought this was edgy at the time, but I suspect those were younger readers who hadn't seen other material at the time. While Kick-Ass' conceit was somewhat interesting, it wasn't particularly new or original per se, but rather high-profile and did a decentjob of combining disparate elements from other sources into a single pitch.
By this point though, it's really spending a lot of time lampshading some of its elements and also really, really on the nose at points. I don't particularly enjoy this, but I suspect it wasn't written for me. I think the only thing that bugs me personally is that it makes all these attempts to say 'pfft., fucking nerds, this isn't how it would work in the real world' and then proceeds to do tons of things that absolutely would not work in the real world. It wouldn't stick out if you didn't call attention to it so much, IMHO.
If the electricity got that far into your body, it would hit your heart first, and kill you that way. (Why am I trying to inject reality into a Mark Millar comic?)
