"What hope is there?"

Cue a very nice panel of Superman. :)

I can't stand the amount of time an energy that DC put into telling stories that are just continuity fixes.

And by continuity fixes, you mean retcons, changes and reboots that just end up making 90s Hawkman look straightforward?

My formerly-local comic shop had a sign on the wall that read "It has been ____ months since DC rebooted the universe."

the biggest issue I have with it is so many of them acknowledge that they're just stories

At this point DC continuity is so screwed up following reboot after reboot that they should just blow up the universe and start over. Maybe they can get George Perez to draw that.

Retcons! The cause of, and solution to, all of continuity's problems!

The issue is the reboots themselves tend to 'blow up the universe and start over,'... only they then, like, half start over. Which is a worst of both worlds situation.

My view is it's better to just roll with it and slowly paper over continuity problems. Pretend things are smoother than they are and eventually they will be.

I mean, Marvel's had ONE reboot in what, 58 years of publication? I hesitate to guess how many DC's had since 1985, but since I only bought one title this week and it was a Sandman Universe one, I'm not enirely confident that there hasn't been another one since June.

And even that was a pretty soft one.

For DC, CoIE and nu52 are the big ones, Rebirth only a bit behind, then you have Zero Hour as a minor one....
