One page from the House of X preview

A preview of House of X/Powers of X has been released (you can find it on comixology).

Now there's some interesting stuff in there and I'm sure that more will be posted next week when House of X comes out, but I simply HAD to share this page because, well, because I am a simple Icon_UK, and you know me well enough by now.



So Krakoa seems to be the new base of operations, with a network of teleportation portals allowing mutants (and mutant approved non-mutants and who is running the operation?



YUP! Cypher's BACK!

Doug Ramsey looking happy and cheerful and optimistic and pretty (let's not deny it) and with an interesting technorganic arm (so artists should find him more interesting to draw) and serving a unique and useful purpose!

Okay Jonathan Hickman, you have my attention!

yea, it won't last. We'll be back to dark pessimistic crapsack word hating, fearing, and persecuting mutants before you know it. Inside 7 issues I'll bet.

Yeah, I had a twinge that this happy scene was being made happy precisely because it's THAT scene in the thriller, you know, the one just before we cut to the aftermath of the ghastly attack by the baddie.

But I think Power of X is going to be the messy one, and this is going to be at least upbeat for longer than half an issue.

At least that's what I keep telling myself.

This is a good surprise.
The other one being that Banshee is alive, which makes me hope that the other deaths from Rosenberg's X-Ultimatum Arena will be undone.

Still, while this little cameo is good, the New Mutants and the others never-to-be X-Men deserve more than that. I hope they will get more than that.

Like all good Claremont characters, Sage's little known other other power is delivering exposition.

And those yellow jackets... not Doug's worst look (cough*newxfactor*cough) but... hnnn...

Doubt there'll be any problem living on an island that's already tried to kill them all once.
... nah, Krakoa's probably got it all out of his system.

Doug's X-Factor costume wasn't THAT bad, he had the colouring to make it work (unlike some others) and he rocked the green lenses.

And as for Krakoa, apart from it already serving loyally as a base for the Jean Grey School for a while, as Scott put it (coincidentally enough when Emma objected to Doug being back on the team after his Selene controlled attack on Magma during Necrosha)

I think perhaps you may be a little biased on the subject of Doug.
Just sayin'.
(Though, yeah, admittedly, it did work better on him than it did literally everyone else on the team.)


Attacked is one thing. Actually killed is another.
Even Logan only usually tries to stab everyone a little. And he hardly ever succeeds.

If this is the Krakoa from 'Wolverine & The X-Men', it's not the original, but a descendant created by FrankensteinHe's jolly nice as long as you DON'T STEP ON THE FLOWERS.

Yes, it seems like it’ll function like a combo Gateway, Utopia and Ship. I liked the idea from WATXM, even if it never really panned out to much.

Nothing says All-New, All-Different like a font adjustment. And hopefully ignoring everything from the painful worst-ever run that just finished. Banshee being alive is a good sign on that.

how many times have they done secret enclaves in the past? I mean to be honest this seems to be very much repeating old ideas. At a glance this easily seems like Morrison combined with the Utopia storyline

Speculation I've seen is that this is likely to pick up on HIckman's Ex Nihilo/terraforming stuff with the X-Men living in another secret enclave, possibly on another planet. Which seems interesting, but also we've had a fair amount of secret enclave stuff with the X-Men, which always smacks vaguely of segregation and seems to preclude really going in on the minority metaphor. I mean, it's probably not super controversial at this point to call the minority metaphor somewhat flawed, but I really want to see it approached with care by someone with the right sensibility, since it's never going away.

I feel like we’ve done the mutants-only location idea before and it always ends up the same way. I’m hopeful with Hickman that this time there’s something new.

Minority themes can easily be explored through mutants, although the fact that mutants aren’t allowed to advance at all is frustrating and unrewarding. The main flaw I see in the minority metaphor is fandom. Some people seem to expect metaphors to be literally the exact same thing with just a name change. A large portion of fans can’t seem to extrapolate any more.

It's all in the execution, but I don't see how a mutant nation/island/whatever is any more inherently segregation than Israel.

In seriousness, there's maybe nothing inherently wrong with the idea, but few writers are equipped to handle it in a thoughtful way. It's much to easy for it to feel cartoonish.
