[personal profile] cyberghostface posting in [community profile] scans_daily

Earlier this year I posted Joker's solo series which ran for nine issues. There was also a tenth issue that was completed but never published. Four decades later it was included in The Joker: The Bronze Age Omnibus. Fortunately for those not wanting to pay sixty dollars just to get one issue DC recently released the issue on digital format for $1.99. So without further ado...

On a related note the Joker just knocked Deadpool off the spot for the biggest R-rated movie ever.

Holy shit. I came in here expecting wacky PG rated Joker antics, and it ends with him hanging Wonder Woman with her own lasso. Sometimes I forget that the older stuff could get pretty dark too.

Oddly enough, my reaction was more like "oh, they killed a female character and it wasn't graphic at all, it was offscreen even, and about as fast and non-sexualized as it can be. Nice."

I mean, I'm not even talking about modern stuff. Even 20 years ago, when Jason was Robin, there was a story about an incel serial killer who assaulted women, dragged them away and dismembered them, then threw their graphically mutilated bodies in a dumpster.

Or, off the top of my head, Artemis's death. They stripped off the cloth over her breast and crotch and posed her like a pin-up model.

You really gotta go this far back for a "clean" kill.

Wasn't Jason Todd killed in 1988? That's...way further back than I thought this trend started. Yikes.

Sort of... between 88/89 depending which issue you consider him to have 'died' in.

That story was shortly before that, so probably 88 too? Or 87.

I think nothing exemplifies the "artists are artists and writers are writers" joke about comics like having the Devil appear as Elton John and sound like Vegas lounge lizard.

So the Joker basically does a "Tower of Babel" set up with him instead of Batman?

Though I do wish they'd maybe taken advantage of the intervening 40 years to maybe NOT mis-reference schizophrenia like thatl

Judging by the cover, I'm guessing Maggin couldn't find room to squeeze Superman into this story? Shame.
