Mr. J's wave of success continues as his film has been nominated for four Golden Globes and seven Critics Choice Awards. It's been nominated for Best Picture and Best Actor for both.

It remains to be seen whether or not Joaquin will follow Heath Ledger's footsteps and become the second Joker to win an Oscar but I'll be shocked if he doesn't get a nomination. If Joaquin does win then the Joker will become the second character in cinematic history to have two different actors win an Oscar playing him, the first being Vito Corleone with Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro which isn't bad company to keep.

I don't quite understand all the accolades the movie is getting. Was I alone in finding it pretty formulaic?

I don't know about formulaic. Certainly it was misery porn, going out of its way to be the opposite of fun, but the twist-on-a-twist and the unreliable narrator moments were interesting enough.

Well, good for him. Honestly, this was likely the most ambitious film majority of its audience has ever seen, and Phoenix is truly an excellent actor.

Way I heard it, the movie is a denunciation of class warfare and of policies that screw over the poor and disabled.

I couldn't bring myself to watch it because it's apparently incredibly depressing. But if the other stuff is accurate, then it's a good thing a movie that calls out economic inequality is getting popular at a time when billionaires are more powerful and tyrannical than ever.

See, I feel like that's the intended message, but it's a little tough for me to square an attempt to make the Joker stand for protest against an unequal society with the fact that he already stands for, you know, chaos and mass murder. My feeling is that rather than afflicting the comfortable, the movie's scenes of mob violence by Joker imitators will allow conservatives to nod to each other and say, "Yeah, maybe it IS rough having no money, but sheesh, antifas be crazy. You bought your postapocalypse bunker yet?"

As the portrait of an ordinary man's transition to supervillainy, Joker is often psychologically effective. Even Taxi Driver with Heath Ledger Snapchat Filter retains a lot of the power of Taxi Driver. And Joaquin Phoenix is in complete sync with the film's vision. But the ordinariness he brings to the character does make it really, really hard to believe this guy is going to be matching wits with the World's Greatest Detective in ten years, or even staying out of jail once the police shift their policy to "you know what, let's just detain EVERYONE in clown makeup and sort it out later." Not to mention that this Joker looks like by the time Batman's career gets underway, he'll be about 65.

(I realize you haven't seen the film, but I've had that on my chest for a while.)

IMO, it barely did that. It came off as more of a "pat me on the back for bringing these issues up in a movie" and didn't dive deep into any of them other than to depict how messed up it makes the Joker. It's a surface skim, like skipping stones across a lake, than a true commentary about mental health issues, the divide between the haves and have nots, and how those policies affect folks.

Everything's coming up Marty! The King Of Comedy remake is getting a (checks notes) prestigious golden globes nomination.
