Return of The Jedi #4- The Final Duel

We reach my favourite part in movie adaption comics, when they realize they have to cram the last third of a movie into a single issue.
It was difficult cutting this down to 5 and a third pages out of 16. I had to cut out Admiral Ackbar saying "It's a trap".

Also it's the world premier of Rise of Skywalker. Let us journey back to 1983, to the film that would ended the Star Wars Saga forever....

Darth Vader takes Luke to the Emperor on the Death Star. Meanwhile with the Rebel fleet due to arrive soon the Rebel forces on Endor, attack the shield generator,protecting the Death Star.

The Emperor reveals that the Death Star is operational, and this was all a ploy to wipe out the Rebels. As the Rebel fleet is atatcked, Palpatine tries turn Luke to the Dark Side. He eventually goads Luke into fighting, while Vader steps in to protect his master.










With the shields down the Rebel ships can launch an assault on the Death Star.





The Death Star explodes taking out the Imperial fleet. The Empire is defeated. Somehow.



Sigh....

Good Lord why couldn't this have been the end? I would be perfectly fine giving up everything I loved about the EU (which is most of it) if it meant never having to live through the "ReyLo" trilogy.

Lol Finn had potential. The original plan was to make him a force sensitive Storm Trooper turned Jedi in training. I honestly believe it would have made for a more interesting story than what we ended up getting.

But what if there was a Desert Youth who wanted more? So Disney Lucasfilms decided they need to tell that story instead.

Original plan matters not given that it was never materialized and the plot lost any interest in the character upon him joining the rebels.

It really is baffling when you look at the comics and novels where you have characters like Aphra that are more interesting than any of the heroes in the new trilogy. Or plot ideas like "Vader and Palpatine stranded on a planet with the rebellion trying to kill them" which would have been more fun than anything we got from the Disney films.

This is really painful. New expanded universe stories are on average of better quality than Legends (I was only really interested in stories set in distant past anyways, the old expanded universe did continuation poorly). Meanwhile, the official film continuation is populated by cardboard cutouts, with only characters allowed *some* depth being Luke and Kylo.

I like Finn and Phasma, and BB-8’s pretty cute. Kylo’s fairly interesting and Maz was pretty cool.

That’s just my opinion, though.

Yeah IMO Kylo is one of the most interesting characters in the series. He's the best part of the new trilogy at least.

Finn is a good character. Poe Dameron redeemed himself a lot as a character for me in the last film. By fucking up the resistance so badly, if Vader had been around he would have taken the weekend off and just let Poe Dameron get on with destroying the rebellion.

Kylo is the sole interesting new character IMO. Crudely said, he has two dimensions where others have one.

I like Finn, and Rey, and Poe could be interesting. I just wish that they hadn't focused so much on Kylo Ren. Ren is just this entitled whiny man child.

I think he is a good character, but a bad fit to the main villain role. Along with Hux, I get no feeling that they are competent villains. They feel more like comic relief material that someone is trying to play straight.

The story would have been better if it focused solely on Kylo Ren, preschoolers playing with toys give the characters they invent more interesting personalities, backstories and adventures than Disney did with all the other new characters.

This discussion reminds me of a bit I saw on a blog of "things you would have been laughed at if you'd told people in 2009." Among the obvious stuff of politics and sports, there was "there would be brand new Star Wars movies not made by George Lucas but fans would rant about them and suddenly say the prequels were great after all."

I love the ones going "Lucas should have been allowed to finish his vision.." And he's openly said how his sequel plans included looking at "The scientific origins of the Force, lots of midichlorin talk. The fans would have hated it."

I for one would have liked that. It would turn Star Wars into a proper science fiction.
