I don't really agree with the author in quotation, as the appeal of WhiteKnight!Joker is very different from Mainstream!Joker. He represents a chaotic trickster archetype, more in common with Star Trek's Q, My Little Pony's Discord or She-Ra's Double Trouble, rather than chaotic evil incarnate the Mainstream!Joker became in last thirtysome years. Liking WhiteKnight!Joker is more like liking byronic dubious villains like Tom Hiddleston's Loki, Kylo Ren or Lotor in his Voltron: Legendary Defender incarnation. Completely different appeal.
And people in general seem not to realize the full appeal of troubled villains. My mind is a bog and it's a torturous work to not spill the bog into the real world. Were I a fictional character, I would have never been accepted among heroes.
