I wonder if Millar is going to try to spin the Branch Davidians as "misunderstood martyrs" just trying to save the Messiah from the evil nebulous forces of the Anti-Christ.
Noted before how it seems some comforting reflex for writers to act like all the events of the last few decades have been part of some 147-step plan set up by an elite band of masterminds rather than just pure random chaos.
This is such a facile reading of modern history and politics. The forces of Satan are simultaneously behind the European Union with the ultimate goal of a one world government while also pushing to sow chaos and division? Wouldn’t they see how destabilizing China is counterproductive to a strong African Union, not to mention any kind of Pacific or Central Asian Union? It is so so counterproductive. Maybe it wouldn’t have taken them 2000 years to get their shit together if they hadn’t decided to constantly undermine their efforts in either direction. It seems more likely that Millar isn’t too keen on terrorists (understandable) or the EU and decided his omnipotent baddies should be pulling the strings behind both.
I really can’t stand the kind of historical fiction where characters make references to future events in such absurdly specific ways on the best of days. Having a Patented Millar Badass accurately predict 9/11 and its knock on effects to the day just makes my stomach churn.
I'd be going, "huh, fascinating idea, reworking The Omen from the other side..."...if too many nutcases and evangelical fundamentalists in the real world hadn't already been preaching exactly this same twisted crap and using it to justify their support of the current US admin.
Now I'm just going, "shut up, Millar, the asshats are doing enough damage on their own."
