Mod Post: Off Topic Tuesday
Jan. 21st, 2020 07:00 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
I just spend the day watching Netflix's "Dont F*ck With Cats," a true crime documentary about an evil kitten killer who eventually progresses to puppies and then people. He's chased by a group of intrepid amateur internet sleuths and eventually Interpol. It's a wild ride.
Anybody else seen this?

Date: 2020-01-21 05:34 am (UTC)I get the fascination with serial killers (though personally I'm more interested in con men, thieves, and mobsters) but I can't think of anything less appealing than violence toward animals.
Then again the last thing I watched on Netflix was the Ni No Kuni movie. Its okay. Not bad. Not good. just okay. I don't regret watching it but I might have regretted buying it.
I watched The CW Crisis crossover this weekend even though I'm not current on any of the shows. I feel like its impossible to discuss without spoilers but I like where they ended up even though I think most of the cameos were wasted opportunities (other than Wolfman; Marv was perfect).
(Also, the Doom Patrol from Doom Patrol and the Doom Patrol from Titans are confirmed to be from different universes)
Speaking of streaming services, does anyone know when Disney+ is getting some new content? The Mandalorian has been done for about a month now and all I'm hearing is information on what's NOT coming (Hawkeye and at least one of the Muppet projects are probably dead). I thought DCU was slow with one show a week.

It's genuinely awful, even though the documentary doesn't actually show the violence to them. Just hearing about it is bad enough.

Date: 2020-01-21 07:19 am (UTC)Oh an episode about a space hotel being besieged by aliens, could be intrest-Oh wait now it’s about a band of survivors having to traverse a desolate wasteland.
Like all good twists, it had no contributions to the plot, nor thematic impact or significance.
I sure hope this season improves.
They released the first promotional images for the Discworld Watch show. It’s not what I was expecting… In the books they wore armour as part of their uniform, but now they seem to have jeans and jackets.
They also released the poster for The Amazing Maurice movie, which looks better, but not a lot to go on at this stage.
Some thoughts on the Captain Marvel film, which isn’t called Captain Marvel (due to decisions I refuse to acknowledge).
Fun movie, nice to see that this film franchise can be good.
It’s odd, now people can buy toys of Batman, who in universe is a murderous vigilante who brands criminals, causing them to be murdered in prison. But if they want to forget Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice, I guess I’ll oblige them.
Also, that kid shouldn’t have been playing Watch Dogs. Because it’s a pretty mediocre game and in no way child friendly.
His Dracula show, proves that Moffat is a one trick pony.

Date: 2020-01-21 10:59 pm (UTC)I'm not even bothering with Dracula. I watched Jekyll and I saw what happened with Sherlock. Moffat is better off doing episodes or episodic shows, not arcs.

Date: 2020-01-21 11:00 am (UTC)Instead, this weekend I saw "I Lost My Body" at the art house (most of you can get it via Netflix). I liked the disembodied hand stuff more than the backstory, but the ending was good.
And I posted more reviews to my blog, including this one of the first work where the hero is a rich idiot with no day job who's secretly a crusader for justice: http://www.skjam.com/2020/01/19/book-review-the-scarlet-pimpernel/

Date: 2020-01-21 11:55 am (UTC)Second season of Peepoodo (Happy Tree Friends but with sex instead of gore) have been successfully founded. Their new adventures will be in space, with, I'm expecting, several anime references and tentacular aliens.
Crisis Jung (Hokuto no Ken, but with nudity in top of gore) will come to Netflix, at least in France.
Fourth season of Les Kassos (trash parodies of popular movies/series/cartoons/games) have been streamed.
I still have "Jimmy" Lannister's "put your peepee in your sister" song in my head.
Also I've accidentally suscribed to Amazon Prime's free trial month. So I guess I'm gonna watch The Boys. Any suggestions about other good series and anime I can watch there?

Date: 2020-01-21 12:18 pm (UTC)...Holy cow Crisis Jung on Netflix? for real?? Hell Yes!! I've been hoping to watch it for over a year now eeeeeeee
Now please give me a putative release date for Mars Express and I'll be the happyest fanthing ever?no subject
Date: 2020-01-21 03:18 pm (UTC)As for anime, I thought Welcome To The Ballroom was decent enough. It's not great or anything, nothing to write home about, and it has certain bits that I found irritating (ex: "lol gay men are scaaaaary!"). But the extremely unusual subject (it's a sports anime about ballroom dancing) and the beautiful animation make it worth a watch imo.

Date: 2020-01-22 04:15 am (UTC)I'm jumping on the Good Omens bandwagon.
I liked the first season of Jack Ryan (haven't seen the second)
It thought the The Tick had kind of a rough start but I really liked where it eventually went.
I thought Alpha House was a political comedy that never got a chance. YMMV since real politics have surpassed it in terms of ridiculousness,
Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku is a really good slick of life romance anime about actual adults.
Re:Creators is an anime about a bunch of fictional characters from various genres ending up in the real world.
Its probably worth seeing what movies are currently on Prime, too. I likely wouldn't have watched The Big Sick or Ladybird otherwise.

It's an attempt to build a new social platform where "antis" (people who harrass others over shipping preferences) are not allowed.
Worth a shot. The purity culture has got so bad, just a couple of days ago I saw a guy get dogpiled and called a pedophile for being attracted to a 16 year old character. The guy in question was 17. We have really reached the point where you are accused of pedophilia for liking minors even if you are a minor yourself.

Date: 2020-01-21 04:41 pm (UTC)Because the character I’ve created for this one shot, Darcy Notes, Girl Detective is heavily inspired by Nancy Drew, I’ve been catching up with the girl detective. I watched the first episode of the 1995 series (do not recommend), the old black and white movie Nancy Drew, Reporter (fine, but that is not Nancy Drew) and of course been keeping up to date with the new series (fun but, again, doesn’t really feel like a Nancy Drew story, what with all the ghosts), I’ll probably rewatch the two most recent movie versions (Emma Roberts and Sophia Lillis, both of which I enjoyed)
Also apparently Dynamite published not one but three different comic featuring Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys in the past three years? All of which ended with a promise of more. Anyone know if they plan on continuing them all? I’m looking forward to more of all three.

Date: 2020-01-21 05:53 pm (UTC)The final fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Fighter Pass #1 is... Byleth from Fire Emblem: Three Houses! I know not a lot of people are to keen on them, but I’m really glad to see them there since I never thought they were going to get in (plus, that means more Sothis, and that’s always a good thing in my book). In an unexpected turn of events (which is probably something you could say about anything in regards to Smash), Altaïr from Assassin’s Creed and the eponymous Cuphead join the fight as Mii costumes.
Here’s to Master Chief hopefully showing up in the next pass! I hope Sakurai gets some well deserved rest, though.

Date: 2020-01-21 08:18 pm (UTC)I mean Hilary only became the "right choice in hindsight" due to Trump winning, otherwise, it would be the terms I already described.
Or the fact that while people can hate Trump, there are sense of people seeing left as "self-righteous and morally puritan" (I've seen few of them conflating Libertarians with authoritarian rightwing, "annoying PC people", not familiar with George Carlin's "anti-PC as in upset over trivial matters rather than focusing on bigger things" humor, or South Park's current crops of critics that sometimes border on censorship even if I dislike their laziness and "mock both sides without analysis") even if they may have heard it from far-right people or influences even if they disagree with them. Or people listening to "centrist" (read: claiming to be despite obviously biased tone) youtubers like Sargon and Tim Pool.

Date: 2020-01-22 06:18 pm (UTC)I dislike that reylo wank lead to people talking en masse about why writing about Bad Boys as desirable is Wrong TM. I grew up with Roma boys, Jewish boys, Russian or Ukrainian boys and ESPECIALLY queer boys being considered Bad Boys. Meanwhile, the Good Catholic Boys were the ones most likely to abuse their girfriends/wives. In UK, Polish boys and other Eastern European boys are Bad Boys. I'd run away with Bad Boy Loki without a second thought, but do everything in my power to avoid interracting with Good Boy Steve "Heil Hydra" Rogers. I hate it that so many people see no metacontextual aspect of the Bad Boy thing. Hell, even fictional Bad Boys are often Jewish or queer coded.
sorry if I'm rambly I'm on some hefty meds
Date: 2020-01-23 03:24 am (UTC)Fricking purity culture- we are not examining what is going on and what works and what doesn't and the WHY of it all.
But yea "bad boy" imagery in a lot of media has roots in a lot of social stigma. Not familiar with European standards too much but a lot of "greaser" imagery we use here in the states is based on a lot of low income immigrant stereotypes (think West Side Story sort of thing). They only get to be "cool" and harmless when we have white boys wear these things. Zoot suit and the riots of the same name are also a lovely headache of racism whose fashion became a symbol forever after.
But it's one of those things where people don't think too hard where our iconography comes from and what we've internalized. The Other is always a popular figure to point fingers at and go "We don't have a problem - They are the problem." But there are people who see these figures and relate to them. Similar to folks who are into monsters. Nothing wrong with fiction of either - purity culture just doesn't think about things critically or analytically. Once again - difference between the outsider 'bad boy' and abuse.

While I do agree that Democrats can have issues, his entire videos collections--especially the headlines--seem to have questionable sources...at least commenting while reading an article with no direct link to the site on his video page or all.
Just that people like him seem to be vocal on youtube politics. Remember when The Young Turks and VICE were the only ones on online news? Now, people try to make their own sensational media to combat sensational media for some reason.)

Date: 2020-01-23 06:54 am (UTC)(So I finally found a page of polls calculation for Impeachment opinions.
And yes, while it isn't large, it was a big jump though part of me think that the early years had Republican control, and "President Pence" fear might influence the early shortfalls that might affect public opinion.
After all, I don't tend to take everything at face value, no matter how tempting it may be.)
