Certainly if you read the Annihilation stuff, he's very hard bitten. He's much rougher, he's much gruffer, he's sort of a veteran. It almost seems the Peter Quill that we've seen in more recent years, the goofier, more lighthearted version, is almost like the bandage over the top of that, like he's been trying really hard for a long time to kind of be okay and he's almost managed to fool himself. -- Al Ewing

Even Quill knows death in comics has the stopping power of stubbing your toe.
Mind, given the things he's survived, it's not an unreasonable attitude to have.
So long as them movies make money, he's outright indestructible.
While the idea of Peter's goofier characterisation being a coping mechanism has some credit, we all know what the real reason is, and sadly a logical consequence of the metric ton of horrors Quill's gone through ain't it.
Also, that bit with the element gun is pretty great.
And the stuff with Phyla and Heather.
(Even Hercules isn't too irritating, even though he seems to be the obligatory "Earth-based character shoved onto the team" the Guardians seem required to have these days.)
