Mod post: Off-Topic Tuesday
Mar. 31st, 2020 11:51 amIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
As the world continues to address and grapple with COVID 19, I won't spend time on it here as you don't need it (If you want to raise it, then of course feel free to do so). And since politics is completely wound up in that for the moment, you're not getting anything along those lines from me either.
Though I will say that last weeks "#ClapforCarers" in the UK, a round of applause and cheering from across the ENTIRE country in support of carers, medical and nursing staff and NHS workers was a remarkably powerful and moving experience of a sort I've never experienced before), and there is ONE other thing it resulted in that I'd like to share.
The Doctor Who fandom has seen a few remarkable things over the past week.
"A Message from the Doctor" was an impromptu video prepared and released by Jodie Whittaker, to reassure younger fans about the current crisis. Her five pieces of advice are probably the most concise and salient ones I've heard yet. (Yes, it looks ike it was filmed inside an IKEA wardrobe, because it was, but that was part of the charm to me).
Also, UK based podcast the Ood Cast had a lovely little rejoinder courtesy of Dan "Strax" Starkey, himself!. This sort of thing from the creators and actors is why I have loved Doctor Who for over half a century now, they not only love the show themselves, they feel they have a responsibility to it's fans, and so far, no Doctor has let the side down!
But there's more! To celebrate fifteen years since the show returned (Good LORD! That long?) Russell T Davies released both a prequel AND a sequel to "Rose"! The former was something he'd written to release around the fiftieth anniversary, but Steven Moffatt politely asked him to steeer clear of addressing the Time War as he had plans, and RTD obligingly did, but no one see's any reason not to release it now, as a sort of former showrunner fanfic.
LeVar Burton commented on twitter that he'd like to narrate and release some audio stories for the general public, but was worried about getting rights. Cue Neil Gaiman, who responded by saying he gave LeVar blanket approval to use any of his stories he wanted. Not sure if any others havejoined in, but I hope so.
In Australia, a possum with a rare mutation which gives it a golden yellow appearance, has been found, and immediately, and perhaps inevitably, been given the name Pikachu! :)
Picard came to the conclusion of it's first season with an ending that felt rather Star Trek-like, though a little oddly unsatisfying too, for reason I'm not quite sure I can make clear AND avoid spoilers. Still, I do want to see the next season, so that helps.
Caught up on some of the new Clone Wars. Liked the first arc, even if The Bad Batch were a little bit TOO toyetic for me. The second arc focusses on Ahsoka's recently post-Jedi times. It's interesting, though she does seem to be a bit more... naive than I'd have expected, even after a life training as a Jedi.
Also the new sentai series, Mashin Sentai Kirameiger has started in Japan, this year based around powerful, gemstones (kaff-kaff-Infinity-War-kaff-kaff) which are not only sentient and can transform, but choose those whose talents cause them to sparkle, with "Imagination" being the most powerful skill of all. It's... sparkly, isn't it? :)
Oh, and my Ducktales rewatch continues and it is awesome!
Also, started Beastars, got to the end of episode 2 and am still working up the courage to watch further.

Date: 2020-03-31 11:00 am (UTC)I'm thinking of a comic book.
In it, Oscar Wilde is on stage, giving a reading to an unappreciative American audience. Somebody challenges him to a fight, so he jumps off the stage and starts laying people out.
I don't believe it's from Hey Oscar Wilde, it's clobberin' time, but...

Date: 2020-03-31 11:41 am (UTC)I enjoyed it a lot! It's a really good movie, as usual for Pixar.
A lot of the reviewers trashed it for being "too weird," which I must admit, really rubbed me off the wrong way. I love Disney movies, and constantly hear people hating on Disney movies and bitching that they are cookie-cutter garbage (and opinion I very strongly disagree with). But when Disney through Pixar makes a movie that is undeniably out of the schemes and original and creative and takes the story in a bold new direction, they pull a 180° and claim to want more traditional stuff??? Sit down and watch some anime, jerks.

Date: 2020-03-31 11:58 am (UTC)Like, okay, I understand (though obviously disagree with) the sociopathic attitude that other people's deaths are an acceptable price to pay for your own convenience.
But where does this confidence, that it will only be other people's deaths, come from? It's a fucking pandemic! AND it disproportionately affects old people, and the politicians scoffing at it are all at least in their 60s. Do they seriously not understand that they are next?

Date: 2020-03-31 11:59 am (UTC)Bofuri: I don't want to get hurt so I'll max out my defense has its last episode last week...with an announcement at the end that it's been renewed for season 2. The show is funny, wholesome and so calming.
Neko Samurai (Samurai Cat in the US) is on Amazon Prime for free. I need time where I'm not constantly checking work emails to watch it so I can pay attention to the subtitles.
Castlevania has been renewed for season 4. Though, after season 3 I don't think I can take any more wheel spinning.
I want to see the new Duck Tales, but I cut the cable cord last year and it's not being Simulcast to Disney+. Annoying.
Amazon is doing a heavy advertising push for season two of The Boys (you know, the series that came about when Garth Ennis was given The Big Book of Problematic Things and his reply was "Challenge Accepted." ). Meanwhile I am still having to deal with crumbs regarding news on Carnival Row, Hunters, and Wheel of Time.

Date: 2020-03-31 12:48 pm (UTC)* Plus there was a lot of dumb and lazy stuff at the start "loss of pension and benefits", really Raffi? In a future where, canonically, nobody has those anyway. Girl, that vape pen of yours done rotted your brain back to the 21stC.
* And a Romulan spy impersonating a Vulcan, but deciding to wear sunglasses when, again canonically going back to TOS, Vulcans have their own biological sunglasses; there is nothing which would say I am impersonating a Vulcan but am not one at all, than wearing sunglasses while disguised as one.
* The swearing, which just seemed so awkward and out of place. It just sounded like exactly what it was, they were allowed to swear so were going to do it to prove they were big boys and girls.
Also they kicked off the series by fridging a woman to motivate Picard. Then they fridged Icheb. Had Seven commit cold blooded revenge murder, okay that might be in character for someone who was Janeway's pseudo-daughter. And Riker is pro-hunting now, when he was the world's biggest douche about hunting way back in S1 TNG, okay, again that might be an improvement on that.
I'm not going to complain about the accents on the Romulans, or that Starfleet is again a shitshow (I am going to complain that the showrunners seem to think we should be on Admiral O'Swearypants side, but Admiral Professor Umbridge was 100% wrong throughout) because Starfleet command has always been a shitshow. Or the mnd transference thing, because that is StarTrek canon way back to TOS, nor complaining about the hidden super androids because that is TOS canon again and hidden godlike aliens is as old as the show too. There was a lot of good, even if I think the Romulans were probably a tad OP in that final encounter given their supposed near destruction, but Romulans pulling hidden assets out of nowhere is also TOS level canon so...
Star Trek Picard S1? Nice pilot, now can we get the rest of the show please.

Date: 2020-03-31 04:13 pm (UTC)I live in Illinois where our governor was one of the first to shut down bars and restaurants (and before St. Patrick's Day to boot which is a huge deal in the state). Because of Chicago, cases are very high and huge concern there. In my town, about 40 minutes outside the city, cases are very low so far so there are some folks around still walking and such and a feeling of "can't we at least open up barber shops?" UK seems different as so much closer in space but in U.S., so much is wide-spread so folks in a small town in Kansas aren't nearly as concerned and think "sure NYC Is messy but we'll be fine."
Human nature can be our major downfall.

Well Star Trek Picard season one ended. It sure was a show. I feel like they wasted a lot of time, so they had to cram a lot of plot into the last three episodes.

Date: 2020-03-31 09:48 pm (UTC)With all this happening, I'm curious what other posters might be turning to in order to pass the time without weeklies, whether that's switching mediums or revisiting old favorites. In the interest of keeping the community here active I wonder if we should consider doing some more theme weeks or request posts, so that members have a reason to share.
