Yeah, a story that could only be told in Ultimate universe, no way 616-Marvel tackles this.
I get they say Wolverine is sent in as his healing factor protects him but would have been a nice touch if his skin was sill popping and boiling before healing up.
I think she made her family sick and killed her dog, then Norman Osborne got a hold of her and experimented on her until her powers increased where she needs a suit.
I believe I remember a 616 storyline where a kid has a mutant power that sets of explosions, winds up in a school, and Wolverine goes in and winds up killing him, although that kid was implied to be doing it semi-intentionally. (Wolverine said both that he 'couldn't stop,' and 'didn't want to stop,').
There was another story with a kid whose power set off explosions where Northstar was trying to carry him... somewhere... to get treatment, and I don't think that kid made it either.
So not this exactly storyline, but not all that far off.
its stories like this where I dont blame the humans for fearing mutants and thinking they are a danger. the x-teams should take that to consideration like Guggenheims last issue of Gold where Kitty and her team was giving the humans are hard time after a mutant manifest his powers and was causing destruction. they x-men appeared to be assholes in this. now humans lose sympathy points when actively seek out to kill mutants or be asshole to them. like if you go attack a mutant with a harmless power or mutation, than you are just a bigoted asshole.
It's also how whenever a "mutant cure" is presented, it's made out horrible and "you can't change what we are," ignoring how scores of mutants would love a cure and several truly are dangerous to those around them with their powers.
It's been shown on numerous occasions that the average mutant-hater in the Marvel universe is someone who would throw rocks at Iceman or Beast as opposed to someone with legitimate concerns over someone with a mutation inadvertently obliterating a towen.
Which leads to the baffling bit on how a mutant who otherwise looks "normal" gets that while, say, the Thing can go walking down the street and folks cheering him on.
There is no blame in humans fearing dangerous mutants whose very presence obliterates those around them. There IS blame for those humans who use the existence of SOME lethal mutants as an excuse to hate ALL mutants. In the same way that one person being a murderer doesn't make all people murderous, mutants as a whole should not be blamed for the occasional monster. In the Marvel Universe, most of the anti-mutant organisations judge the entire people by a few of their number.
I always hated this story. Mutants were originally about the civil rights struggles. About those that were unfairly oppressed. This... justifies the oppression. "Turns out that those that hated and feared mutants were right all along!"
That kid had destroyed a small town, then apparently did something o terrible at the mansion after killing Emma Frost that Xavier went back in time to ensue he would never be born. "Annoyed" is an understatement.
