Where Jeremiah Arkham is explaining to White that they are shredding all of the doctors notes Jane Doe wrote as Dr. Carver, which means he wont be transferred out of Arkham, and we also find out that Dr. Arkham was one of the people who lost their pension over what White did.
"When you cooked your books, Mr. White, You ruined the lives of millions of Americans. You destroyed the pension plans of people from all walks of life: Plumbers, bus drivers, soccer moms..... Asylum administrators. Now, since my own plans for retirement are quite a ways off, I'm sure we'll be seeing a LOT of each other at the Asylum. Good day, fish."
What's worse than being locked up in the most dangerous correctional facility on the planet? Being locked up in the most dangerous correctional facility on the planet, and the guy in charge has a major grudge against you.
And, checking my copy of the trade, I see that I'd misremembered the holder of that grudge. It was indeed Jeremiah Arkham. The trial judge, therefore, had no need to recuse himself from White's case as a couple of commenters to the previous post had objected.
I did correctly remember the judge's smug smile as he passed sentence. Reading between the lines, it seems to me that his reason for choosing Arkham was simply because it was the closest he could get to overturning what he thought was an asinine jury verdict. If White was going to a psychiatric institution instead of jail, the judge was going to make damn sure it wasn't the "posh retreat for the rich" sort of place White was no doubt expecting, but rather somewhere that'd make him wish he were in jail instead.
And again, his amusement at how White, this supposedly sharp guy, never bothered researching why Gotham was the only place an insanity defense is rarely used. It's the smirk on his face going "Wow....you really think you're outsmarting us all, don't you? Enjoy the fun."
Someone at another board suggested that the jury honestly thought White truly was insane....simply because no one in their right mind would plead insanity in Gotham City.
