Nationalism is interesting – the word actually only dates to the 19th century, so he was never strictly speaking a Nationalist, but you can’t help but use our conceptions when looking at it. My core was from what I knew before research – the irony that what almost everyone knows as the story (“Arthur uniting the Britons fighting invaders!”) has the irony that the Anglo-Saxons are the invaders. Early on, I was mainly trying to dig to the earliest sources I could, which as you know is a fool’s game with Arthur. The endless quicksand of the sources certainly worked its way into the plots. -- Kieron Gillen

i really want to like this, because i love Kieron.... but i still don;t understand.... if this is the "Historical Arthur come to life" then magic shouldn't be involve, and Neither should Merlin, or Percival, or any of the things that came after the original Lives of Kings of Britain... Merlin coming into the story should re align towards the "good King Arthur" not the "Historical Tyrant".... Arthur is right... all is confusion....

It's not so much "historical Arthur" as "Early mythic Arthur".

Also, Beowful means Bee-Wolf, taboo-name of "Bear".

Part of the story is how the myths become so complex and entwined that they're accepted as "truth" and thus harder to figure things out. Even Arthur can't understand what his own "history" Is because of it.

It's a case where the actual comic sells it better as the pages not scanned fill in the blanks and really does work well.
