Thinking of the Aurora theater shooting taking place during a showing of The Dark Knight Rises, I can't help but feel the setting of this is a misjudged creative choice.

Well, the theater setting is kinda baked into the mythos, a lot older than Aurora. I'd agree with you if the plot were the Joker shooting up a theater, but this seems removed and bizarre enough to get a pass.

Zombies are an interesting choice, though.

Huh, sliding continuity makes it hard, of course, but I'd've pegged Joker's death total as substantially more than would fill a movie theater.

He mentioned that he had killed thousands in Tom King's run and I'm inclined to believe it wasn't hyperbole

Jason in UTRH also stated that Joker has single-handedly filled whole cemeteries.

Yeah, a theatre wouldn't be enough, an entire franchise chain of multiplexes probably wouldn't be enough.

The Monarch Theater was first in the 1989 Batman movie. It has been used in some video games. Is this the first time the Monarch is used as "the" movie theater in the comics?

I don't think so, since Tim converted the Monarch Theatre to be his secret base of operatons as Red Robin pre-Flashpoint IIRC.
