NS: DC FanDome - Speaking of Suicide Squads...

While WB Montreal is working on Gotham Knights, Rocksteady has officially unveiled their hotly anticipated Suicide Squad game! The premise might not be to everyone's tastes, but as a video game I think that sounds like that could be really cool.

If you can't see the video, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is about... killing the Justice League.

- Braniac's invaded the earth and has brainwashed the Justice League, so that's up to the Suicide Squad (Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, and King Shark) to take them down.

- The game will be an open-world third person shooter set in Metropolis and supports both single player and up to four player co-op with either friends or bots. Everyone has customisable weapons and their own unique playstyle in regards to combat and traversal through the world.

- This is set in Rocksteady's Arkham universe, and will let players see the continuation of characters and plot points from those games.

- Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is slated for release sometime in 2022 for Xbox Series X, Playstation 5 and PC.

Well, the graphics look great, but I have zero interest in the Suicide Squad so it isn't for me.

Also not sure that particular cast could realistically take down the Justice League, but nbd ig lol.

If this was Ostrander's Squad then I'd be really hyped. But seeing as it's the Will Smith Deadshot Squad... well, it still looks good enough that I'll probably get it if it doesn't totally tank in the reviews. I'll just not wait with baited breath.

I didn't see the movie, so I definitely don't have a vested interest in this version of the team either. There's not one character here that I have an interest in.

Yeah, not a bad small scale Suicide Squad team, but absolutely not a League killer level team.

What COULD they do against Superman without access to Green K weapons or a decent spellcaster?

Short of time travelling boomerang that sets the Kryptonian spaceship to another course before it reaches Earth? Not much. And this version of Boomerang doesn't look like he's one for the more out there Flash villain stuff.

Funny that you mention the small team. I can't recall where but I recently heard someone suggest that a SS game should have a HUGE list of playable characters to build teams from but they slowly become unavailable as they die. That seems like the way to go; make it an Amanda Waller simulator.

This just seems like a third person version of that Quake mod where you kill clones of the X-Men. I get how its fun to be the bad guy in a game but I have no desire to kill Superman.

I do hope that we see a larger roster at some point, however that might work, because otherwise it really seems like missing a big part of the appeal of the Suicide Squad. Focusing on just four relatively big name Squad characters (who all seem to be variations on "gun person" and "larger gun person") misses out on the fun of reinventing and recontextualizing minor characters with strange gimmicks and abilities. It turns them into just another superhero team.

Yeah, I get that Count Vertigo or Major Disaster would probably be harder to program for than gunguy#7 but some variety would be nice. Plus someone like the Parasite or Poison Ivy might actually have a chance at killing the JLA. Also it just seems wrong to leave out classics like Plastique and Bronze Tiger.

Point. Granted the Lego games aren't exactly known for variety of game play. I'm sure there's someone with a unique power that I'm not thinking of but mostly they draw on the same pool of skill sets*. I was thinking of something a little more fleshed out (maybe providing support by disorienting large groups of enemies.

*(Haven't played the Villains one yet but I assume the Vertigo effect manifests like half the other energy blasts)

Also the Lego games were exactly what I was thinking of in terms of huge character count.

The idea of losing characters makes a lot of sense! :)

Maybe if you get to a certain level, you can access the B-Team Waller has set up, with less effective but potentially useful characters/cannon fodder.

I have negative interest in a premise where you kill brainwashed heroes instead of freeing them, so I won't play this game.

But, credit where credit is due, the trailer was great. The banter was genuinely entertaining.

The premise is a bit of a turnoff for me, too, but I hope the takedown of the League are more like the City/Origins boss fights and less like the Asylym/Knight ones.

Huh, I guess there's that Arkham Knight followup I was talking about yesterday. Honestly, this seems like a it of a monkey's paw situation for everyone who asked for a sequel. A Suicide Squad game about fighting more interesting protagonists.

It's extremely weird to see this announced the same day as the extremely mechanically similar Gotham Knights, especially with Knights' soft reboot of the Arkham Knight ending and this being a direct sequel meaning that their continuities are confusing similar. It really seems like there's a ton of overlap here and I'd expect them to cannibalize each other's sales if it weren't for the fact that this game isn't due until 2022. It's worth taking a second and processing the fact that aside from Arkham VR, it will be 7 full years between Rocksteady's two latest games, which is conspicuous even by the bloated standards of AAA game development. Speculation that Rocksteady got partway through another project before cancel it and restarting must be at least partly true and I would love to know the behind the scenes story.

The trailer looks decent, though it reminded me more than anything of the 2014 videogame Sunset Overdrive and the promotion for the 2016 Suicide Squad, which aren't exactly hot culture touchstones. Of course that's subjective, but the whole Brainiac zombies and jokes thing doesn't look super appealing to me.

Also, Deadshot has had some truly ugly costumes in the past, but this might be one of the worst, and not to nitpick too too much, but Deadshot was definitely white the last time he showed up in an Arkham game, so clearly the continuity isn't that tight.

I like Deadshot’s look. Better than his Arkham City look, anyway.

The Arkham games post-City are generally consistent with their canon, so I’m guessing this is a different Deadshot and King Shark than before (maybe a grown up Kid Shark?). I hope Killer Frost comes back.

Also, if the Justice League do definitively exist in the Arkham series, where were they during Hugo Strange’s prison scam, and how come Batman didn’t call for their help during his Joker blood possession?
