Director Matt Reeves also unveils more on HBO's Gotham PD prequel/spinoff. Hopefully that ends up better than the last Gotham police procedural.

Very dark, literally as well as figuratively, I do wish they could have afforded a couple of higher wattage light bulbs, and a little colour wouldn't have killed them, would it? (But that's been a quibble of mine about a lot of movies for a long time though)

It's not a veteran Batman either, it's not going full on "Dark Knight Returns" of having him already by decades in costume.
It's Batman as I want a Batman movie to be, without the (at this point) unnecessary 40 minutes prologue of how his parents are deaaaaaaad and choosing to take vengeance in their name. but without skipping all the other stuff.
I also think my view is somewhat colored because of the Director's comments on the movie and his general vision, which I liked so far.

Date: 2020-08-23 03:24 pm (UTC)It looks like this version of the Riddler is doing a serial killer vigilante thing, which, while old hat in the comics, isn't something I can recall seeing on film before, so that could be interesting. I'm a big fan of death traps and heists Riddler, but it's been a while since that version of the character has seen the light of day even in the comics, so I think this could be a unique take.
Not nearly so excited about the Gotham PD spinoff, especially so soon after the ending of the Gotham series. Between the two I wonder if we could be witnessing the emergence of Gotham cop stories as a permanent part of the crossmedia Bat-mythos, much like how the Spider-Verse stuff became a huge part of Spider-Man in recent years. If that is the case, I can't say I'm happy about it. I expect given the context of Gotham and rampant corruption this won't be entirely typical copaganda, but in 2020 I could still stand to see less cop-centric stories. I will say though, that setting it in Year One seems like a good idea (though obviously one with a limited shelf life) to let them actually do Batman stuff but without having him be a normal, everyday presence.

Date: 2020-08-23 04:22 pm (UTC)It's a bit broad, but it's gained a lot of traction in the past couple of years for obvious reasons. Like I said, Gotham PD probably won't end up being typical copaganda if it's going to deal as heavily with corruption as they say, but I'm still not hot on cop stories right now.
