Mod Post - Off Topic Tuesday
Aug. 25th, 2020 12:12 pmIn the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.
Not much time today, so will be fairly brief.
Last weeks virtual DNC saw Joe Biden formally approved to run for President, with Kamala Harris as his VP.
The virtual RNC is running this week, stating that they will forego their own platform to 100% support the Trump Administration so they will basically use the 2016 platform (which, it has been noted included opposition to same-sex marriage and transgender military personnel, and supported LGBT+ conversion therapy and the rights of businesses to discriminate against same-sex couples.). And some of the speakers seemed to indicate that even if Trump does lose in November, there will be plenty more like minded souls to take his place in future. Make of that what you will.
Bad weather on both sides of the Altantic, so stay safe all!
Schools in Scotland have re-opened for the new school year, and already the rules have changed to make pupils aged over 12 wear masks in communal area's but not in classes, as social distancing rules are already being enforced.
To the delight of those who care, the Last night of the Proms, WILL include "Land of Hope and Glory" and "Jerusalem" (Rare to have a hymn which asks a question which can pretty much instantly be asnwered with the word "No") though only instrumental performances as there will be no singing allowed.
Not watched much new TV this week, though I am do have the first episode of "Lovecraft Country" to watch and the reviews have been impressive.
Someone taught themselves 3D rendering during the lockdown, got a little carried away, and THIS was the result!
I did finish the new Night Vale novel, "The Faceless Old Woman who Secretly Lives In Your Home" which is impressively written even if I'm not sure this is anything like the background I'd pictured for TFOWWSLIYH. It manages to be grander and, at the same time, pettier and cruller than I'd thought it would be. Impressive though.
Next up is "At Childhood's End", the Doctor Who novel where 7th Doctor companion Ace meets the 13th Doctor, all written by Ace herself, Sophie Aldred. So far it's excellent, with some interesting discussion about the Doctor's hypocrisy about weapons... S/He may not carry a gun (apart from the times they have) but 7th certainly didn't object to Ace carrying and using Nitro-9. Also how Ace managed to become a multimillionaire philanthropist. :)
Random question of the week: Most importat advice you'd give your younger self were you able to?

Date: 2020-08-25 12:35 pm (UTC)Supernatural season 15 is planned to start airing again, after a length hiatus. In October the Winchesters long, long journey will finally end. I remember a person in high school saying that the show had been going downhill since season six. I don’t know what happened since then….
The head writer of Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines 2, has been replaced. Along with the game’s release being pushed back, this doesn’t inspire much confidence. I see two options,1) the next few months are spent fixing a mostly finished game up for release, 2) a bunch of major changes are made to the games design and story in the last few months.
Well the local care centre has shut down. They haven’t said it outright, but most people assume it’s to bulldoze it and build new beach front properties, and if they have to screw over disabled people then so be it.
Finally broke down and pre-ordered Cyberpunk 2077. Having finished The Witcher games, there’s a lot to be excited for, but I am familiar with their common shortcomings.
El Camino that Breaking Bad movie, is going to be released on DVD.
The New Mutants, is finally going to be released. Obviously, Disney has no faith in it, and is quietly kicking it out the door, thankfull that due to the pandemic they might get away with this.

Date: 2020-08-25 12:49 pm (UTC)New Mutants looks like it could be fun (hey, Lockheed!) but I will not be watching it for a long time because they decided to put it in theaters instead of streaming or direct to dvd/blu ray. At least it isn't a thirty dollar rental on Disney +, I guess.

Date: 2020-08-25 01:28 pm (UTC)To be honest, it was a huge disappointment. Absolutely everybody had been praising this show to high heavens, never heard a negative opinion about it, so I expected to enjoy it. But I just find it mediocre :/

Date: 2020-08-26 03:00 am (UTC)I am completely baffled at the praise for the show about the lesbian space rocks, though. Is there an episode I can skip to where the plot picks up?
I think that's why I avoid a lot of long running anime now. I keep hearing "Jo Jo is great once you get past the early stuff". I want something I can enjoy now.
Speaking of Anime, I just finished the first arc of the Great Pretender (a show about con men cheating bad people) and its great. Its a shame the last half of the series is locked in Netflix jail.

Over at my blog, I post my thoughts on my recent binge, Singapore crime drama "Unriddle." http://www.skjam.com/2020/08/24/tv-review-unriddle-season-one/
Advice to younger self? "Here's the winning lottery numbers for (date), don't spend all the winnings in one place."

Date: 2020-08-25 10:56 pm (UTC)But instead, by renewing the 2016 platform and handwaving any new ideas with "eh, whatever That Guy says," they're (still) saying:
The President has been regulating to death a free market economy that he does not like and does not understand. He defies the laws of the United States by refusing to enforce those with which he does not agree. And he appoints judges who legislate from the bench rather than apply the law.
...
The President has refused to defend or enforce laws he does not like, used executive orders to enact national policies in areas constitutionally reserved solely to Congress, made unconstitutional “recess” appointments to Senate-confirmed positions, directed regulatory agencies to overstep their statutory authority, and failed to consult Congress regarding military action overseas. He has changed what John Adams called “a government of laws and not of men” into just the opposite.
...
Our most urgent task as a Party is to restore the American people’s faith in their government by electing a president who will enforce duly enacted laws, honor constitutional limits on executive authority, and return credibility to the Oval Office.
...
With all our fellow citizens, we have watched, in anger and disgust, the mocking of our immigration laws by a president who made himself superior to the will of the nation. We stand with the victims of his policies, especially the families of murdered innocents.

I'm saying that as someone who has waited years for this movie.
