Marvel have posted a statement from Ryan Coogler, the director of "Black Panther" which says a lot about Chadwick Boseman as a performer, and how damned lucky the MCU was to get him.

The man created a truly astounding body of work in a short period of time, all while battling cancer. Chadwick Boseman is a fucking legend, and I'm heartbroken for what his friends and family and fans have lost.

(I can't help but think of the infamous line in Hudlin's Black Panther run about Wakanda having a cure for cancer, which makes this whole thing just a shade more tragic and ironic.)

For me, the iconic Boseman scene will always be him stepping through that portal in Endgame, like "Okay, we're here, all will be well..."

if he was being treated for four years, he knew he had cancer the entire time he was filming Black Panther.

Yibambe!

Rest in peace, Mr. Boseman.

You may not have been a King in real life, but you were of royal worth.

Thank you for the legacy you have given to us.

Well that's a blow.

I guess Black Panther 2's not happening (an unimportant issue in contrast).

I suspect they will go ahead with it, and dedicate it to Boseman. No idea if they'll recast T'Chala, or retire him offscreen and pass the mantle on to Shuri (or a new character), though.

And RIP, Mr Boseman.

I'd prefer they pass the mantle to Shuri or a somehow resurrected Killmonger. Chadwick Boseman's performance was incredible, and I pity any actor trying to match it.

And man, what a career for being so young! He played Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, and James Brown. He starred in the 9th highest-grossing film of all time, and had a big role in the 4th and 1st highest. Watch 42 if you haven't - he was fantastic.

RIP, Chadwick Boseman.

There had been buzz of the sequel having Shuri step up which seems to indicate some in Disney knew about his condition and making plans to help him out. Of course, this caused an eruption in circles of "Disney's woke agenda ruining more characters" but obvious now why and hope they have some self-recrimination for it (although doubtful given their feelings on stuff).

Just a damn shame, forget T'Challa, so many other amazing performances of his we'll never see.

I'm completely devastated. Lost for words. Can't process this. It hits hard. It's too much.
He was such an inspiration , a true hero on and off screen. A flame brighter than others. The legacy he created is unforgettable. The grace , class and royalty he included in the character, infusing it with the kind of vulnerability and humanity and softness we rarely see in superhero movies.
Rest in power , one true king and real life warrior.

Dreadful news. A gifted actor who had worked hard at his craft, and was just starting to make the global impact that his talents deserved.

We should have had decades more of his work, and his family should have had decades more of him.

RIP Mr Boseman, and thank you.

It's stunning to think that the entire time he was under the physical effort of bulking up to insane superhero fitness levels twice to do Marvel movies and spending months and months on press tours he was dealing with this. The strain that man must have been under is inconceivable.

I'm struggling to fully conceive of the impact of this or find some analogy to this emerging star who meant so much to people dying so suddenly and so young. There's this whole layer of tragedy and meaning that this brings to so many of his roles knowing that he was fighting cancer even as he brought these characters to life.

The whole thing is tragic. RIP.

Screw cancer and screw 2020. What an unbelievable loss--for his family and loved ones, for his friends, for fans and movie-goers, for the world.

The man was like a younger Denzel Washington, no matter the film or role, he gave it his all to stand out. He was going to be an Oscar winner someday, you just felt it.

Among the heartbreaking images is a woman tweeting photos of her six year old son in a Panther costume when he heard the news, peeling of the mask with tears in his eyes. That showed the power of Chadwick and the impact he made in the role.

And the fact he was in Stage 3 for all four movies, not to mention promotional tours and award shows, is astounding. RIP to a man taken far too soon a legacy better than actors twice older.

Cynical prediction: They're going to give him a posthumous Oscar, now that he's safely dead and there's no risk of him embarassing the Committee by addressing social justice issues in his acceptance speech.

I pray he’ll be okay now in whatever afterlife there is, and that his family will be okay through this difficult time,
