BATMAN #431: "The Wall."
Sep. 19th, 2020 01:07 amFor Batman Day, here is 1989's Batman #431, "The Wall." Written by Chrisopher Priest. Art by Jim Aparo.
Mostly a "standard" Batman mystery, with an interesting tie into Bruce's origin story. It is also the first appearance of Master Kirigi.

Batman is in a bad place in this issue.

This super secret training center was shown again in "The Man Who Falls."
In the present, Batman is annoyed a criminal he was shadowing, Ralph Stuart, has turned himself in on various B-level felonies. Batman wanted to beat up Stuart so he could stop thinking about Jason. Batman is in a bad place this issue.
Batman had a tap on Stuart's phone. Alfred's transcription of Stuart's phone calls reveals Stuart witnessed a murder. Which is why he turned himself in for other crimes. But there was no murder across the street from Stuart. Or was there?

Batman has Alfred check Tanja Lloyd's description against any Jane Does the FBI has reported.

In a Los Angeles morgue, a disguised Batman finds the victim. Back in Gotham, Batman grabs a woman who lives on the same street as the victim. And then he visits a crime boss named Mugs Clifford.

Mugs calls Thaddeus Gladden, who is a middleman for the League of Assassins.

How did he know there was four of them? Because he's Batman.
The 4 ninjas and their weapons might be a Teenage Mutants Ninja Turtle shout out. This *was* 1989. One has a spear instead of a bowstaff.
After taking out 3 of the ninjas, using a frying pan on one of them...

Taking off the cape is a cool move.

"Ha ha ha!" THUD.
These ninjas *might* be white. One has blue eyes, at least. I don't think Ra's al Ghul is *that* picky about the ethnicity of the ninjas in the League of Assassins.

Batman's attitude is for a lot of reasons. He would not have even known about any of this if he hadn't had an illegal tap on a criminal's phone. A criminal he wanted to beat up so he would stop thinking about Jason and get some sleep. And the wrong woman died because someone mixed up the numbers on an address. And this is just after Jason's death. So, yeah.
In "The Man Who Falls," written by Denny O'Neil, we saw a little more of Bruce's training with Kirigi.
Kirigi is in the "Bruce trains in North Korea" DLC for "Batman: Arkham Origins." Although he was younger and more brutal in the video game. He also might be the basis for the character Yoru in Batman: The Animated Series.

"The victim was killed using a very rare technique that Batman also knows" plot point was used in DETECTIVE COMICS #634
