I really appreciate how supportive everyone is of Mina in the book. Given how her encounters with Dracula were very clearly horrifying and borderline rapey, I’m rather miffed how cultural perception has shifted their “relationship” to that of star crossed lovers and having Dracula essentially be the “bad boy”/Veronica to Jonathan’s nice guy/Betty.
The poor Harkers always get the short end of the stake, don’t they?
Yeah the idea of making Dracula some romantic hero has always annoyed me. The Gary Oldman version for example turned the forced drinking scene (which is depicted as being akin to rape) into her sensually licking blood off his chest.
The other part of me adores the relationship between Dracula and Lisa in Netflix Castlevania.
I think it's because Castlevania made her into an outcast who was unjustly persecuted simply for being an educated woman. If you want the villain to be desirable, put him against somebody who is much worse.
