'Imma be real, I just remember chanting “Storm, Storm, STORM” a bunch and pounding the table. I am sure there was a lot more nuance to the rest, but I think I just went feral and they indulged me...' - Vita Ayala
She's chanting Storm, she's writing about Storm and excited about it, yes, but I really don't think that quote indicates that Storm is 100% objectively right and meant to be rooted for.
A trusted and well loved family friend and former in-law comes by and asks to borrow something which the Wakandan public never see, for long enough to fight in a battle on which hangs the fate of the entire planet.
The argument used against this is that if nebulous "people" would somehow learn about it being on loan to the former Queen, they'd be really upset, there is no evidence as to HOW they would learn this, or if they would choose to possibly have their world destroyed instead.
It's kinf od hard for me to NOT side with Storm here.
Completely understand Storm's position and she has to do what she has to do, but it's not like T'challa was out with the boys. The Avengers title was torturing him not long ago.
I'm thinking this story would have made more sense if I was reading the Avengers or Black Panther? I was really struggling to understand Wakanda's perspective here...
The thing I don't get is how the Wakandan argument is that the people will be very upset when they learn that the sword is gone. Yet it's locked in an impenetrable vault not open to the public, so how would they ever know?
That was my thought as well...Shuri made it seem that he was days away and Storm would be sitting about waiting for a week. But no, it was just an hour?
I think I actually might be coming around to liking the fact that Storm and T'Challa's relationship is consistently strained. They're both strongheaded people who are consistently certain that they're in the right, are just a touch imperious and used to being listened to, they're both generally self-possessed and in control: they're too similar to really work as a couple. Them just constantly butting heads because they're both in a continual state of Doing The Right Thing is kind of great. It's more interesting than them having a good relationship, or one like Reed Richards and Sue Storm, where despite long standing subtext the tension in their relationship never actually manifests.
I think the fact that neither side is in the wrong here is the point. And if there's going to be a story where two heroes fight I would much rather it be a situation like this as opposed to garbage like Civil War or A vs X or X-men vs Inhumans where one side are disgusting assholes (Or get written OOC as assholes for the sake of the plot) and yet we're still supposed to pretend "Both sides have a point"
Here the conflict is genuinely a case of both sides trying to do the right thing. Storm is trying to prevent an invasion from an army of actual demons that want to wipe out all life on earth by stealing the sword and Shuri is trying to prevent a civil war that could cost countless Wakandan lives by keeping her from stealing it
Certainly there are ways they could have resolved this without conflict but I understand why the conflict happened here and I like that it doesn't turn either of these heroes into a villain for the sake of the plot...unlike the way both of the Civil War events or Avengers Vs X-men deciced to turn Avengers who had been noble heroes for years into fascist scum or the way Inhumans vs X-men tried to claim that it was somehow unfair of Mutantkind to demand that the Inhumans get rid of the gigantic poisonous death cloud they had created that was causing the genocide of an entire species
I also think it makes for a much more interesting story. I hope we see some follow up on this with Ororo attempting to mend things with T'challa and Shuri after what happened
