This will be a three part post, with of stuff taken from the Guts first encounter with the forces of his universe's version of the Vatican.

This first part will mostly be introduction, but it sets the scene for the next two.

Our scene opens with Guts having been captured by the Knights of the Holy Iron Chain, who work for the dominant church of the Berserk Universe. They have been tasked with capturing him as a result of all supernatural occurrences that when he's around. These aren't actually his fault, but the HICKS (Holy Iron Chain Knights, IT'S A PUN) don't know that.

This is Lady Farnese, the HICK's general. She makes a halfway decent attempt to interrogate Guts, but he isn't thatinterested in answering her, He thinks it would be much more fun to hand her what I believe TV Tropes calls a 'Hannibal Lecture'.

That's Azan, The "Bridge Knight" that Guts mentiond, so named because of a battle from when he was younger, where he  defended a bridge against a hundred men singlehandedly. Interesting and probably deliberate parallel to Guts himself, there, because Guts fought a similar battle back when he was with the Hawks.

Anyway, Azan attempts to chastise Farnese for going mental on a prisoner, but she's less interested in listening than Guts was in talking.

And that's Serpico, Farnese's squire. I love how clear an idea he has about who, exactly, was just torturing who.

Stay tuned for part two, in which things really start getting weird.

This is nowhere near a scary moment, and especially for Berserk. For starters, I'd go with the rescue attempt on Griffith. Then maybe some of the troll arc. Then the revisitation of the Eclipse. Then what the Kushan Empire is doing with people. Then the fairy arc. Then the Eclipse.

Might I suggest the Pagan ritual with the goat man?

Even as far as Berserk goes, that was MESSED up. Or Slann in the Troll cave.

Not sure. Except Gatz has a canon instead of a chainsaw.

Guts. It's an actual name, not some Japanese attempt at foreign-sounding gibberish (it's also how Kentaro Miura asked the english translators to translate the name). Notably, it's the name of a German knight and mercenary captain who had a prosthetic hand (normally spelled now with an umlauted "o," but spelling wasn't formalized in the 16th century). No cannon inside it, though.

The creator claimed to have absolutely no knowledge of the historical individual when he designed his Guts.

Berserk started as a prize-winning contest entry in 1988, got published formally (and rewritten a bit) in 1989, and has been coming out biweekly since at least 1992. Army of Darkness came out in 1993. This section most likely came out after AoD, since this is a whole storyline after the Golden Age arc, which was a 13 volume arc after the first 3 volumes (it's over a hundred chapters long. There are a little over 300 chapters so far, with scarcely an end in sight).

So to answer your question, yes.

What... that's a girl! I know it seems stupid for me to be surrpise, but if you watch and read enough manga, you would be pretty sure that Lady Farnese was really a guy.

I'm looking forward to this, but the next time you post manga, could you state whether it's read right to left or has been flipped at the top? It's not always clear immediately.
