"As an enrolled member of the Lipan Apache Tribe, I immediately wondered how Krakoa would politically interact with the hundreds of Indigenous nations within the United States." - Darcie Little Badger
And that final scene has so much Dani/Rahne energy which I love because I adore the two of them as a pairing.
One of the only things I liked about that otherwise fairly abysmal New Mutants film was the fact that it had Dani and Rahne be canon. If only the rest of the movie could have been good and not a lacklustre and racist mess
And I agree that it's wonderful to see Dani get some more proper panel time where she actually has a major role in the story and isn't just kind of there. I hope that we see more of that for her and also for Karma who is tied with Dani in first place as my favourite of the New Mutants now that the book is getting a new writer and the truly atrocious Ed Brisson is being kicked off the book
Literally everything we’ve seen of Krakoa involves the Government forcing an artificially constructed and induced culture built on erasing, shaming and belittling anything even remotely human-adjacent except when that’s convenient for them.
Yeah, I read that line and was like, "It's nice for Dani that she doesn't think it's about assimilation, but I bet she sounds pretty much like the sheriff's boys when they say "We're not about racism or nepotism, we're just about responsibility!"
And while arguably all cultures spend some time separating what they are from neighboring cultures that they are not, some of them are a lot more... into that than others.
It's not really fair putting her on the spot about that, though. Since most likely her situation is like that old joke where someone asks their Soviet friend how it is in the Union. "Can't complain. Can't."
Just, you know, through telepathic influence rather than KGB.
As a queer person I am always baffled when people act like mind control MUST be the ONLY reason any mutants would want to live in Krakoa because it's so weird to me that they think mutants would WANT to live in a hateful place like America if they had a choice
Krakoa offers an oppressed and persecuted minority who are literally regularly threatened with actual genocide, lynch mobs, terrorism and constant abuse, torture and murder by worthless inferior hate filled gutter scum a place where they can live free of bigotry where they can do what they want, have fun and will literally live forever
The way that some fans are like "The only explanation for why they'd accept this offer is MIND CONTROL!" is ridiculous to me
If someone in real life told me there was a nation where all LGBTQ people are allowed where we can live and be happy and straight cisgender people are banned so we never have to deal with their brainless garbage ever again I would be on the next plane there that very day.
Both because I utterly despise the country I live in and its government and also because I utterly despise every last boring anti-LGBTQ bastard living in it
Mutantkind in the Marvel universe aren't being mind controlled. They aren't being forced or tricked or manipulated. They are freeing themselves from years of oppression by humanity because they are no longer going to be pathetic centrist morons that want to play the part of the Good Minority out of some deluded belief that maybe they'll get a pat on the head if they do
Mutantkind forming Krakoa and refusing to take any more of humankinds garbage is something that should have been done decades ago and it's infinitely more interesting to me than some nonsense about "Protecting a world that hates and fears us" because as someone who has been hated and feared in real life? I'd laugh with glee if every last person who who is bigoted against LGBTQ people on this entire planet died in agony so I sure as hell wouldn't waste my time protecting them
Issues of Krakoan culture aside, I do dig this story. The "Go save a mutant from an angry mob; Dani/Rahne team-up in the desert," feels like it could fit in pretty comfortably in the Claremont or Simonson era of New Mutants (except for them not having to sneak out to do it).
Clearly I haven't followed these characters super closely- what's up with Dani's lightbow? That doesn't seem like an obvious extension from either her mutant powers (illusions, often with a specific fear/desire component last I knew) or her oft-uncomfortable Native American powers (ability to communicate with animals, sometimes?). Is it a Valkyrie thing? Is she still a Valkyrie?
While in Asgard Dani figured out how to focus her empathic powers into a psychic weapon similar to Besty Braddock's psychic sword, also her animal telepathy is one of her mutant powers.
Doubly so for me, since it seems to have stirred up the usual suspects in the fandom. Eek, women and people of different ethnic backgrounds! Just make more Wolverine, plz.
These Marvel Voices stories have had some really interesting looking stuff, though in some ways it makes Marvel's diversity issues all the more annoying, because clearly when they actually bother trying to be inclusive they can find plenty of qualified people. Odds are that none of the new creatives from any of these issues will ever write for Marvel again though. With this out only a few days after that Disney+ documentary which tried to make a lack of professionalism from members of the Marvel Old Boys Club look cute, it's particularly aggravating.
As to this story though, it's gratifying to see both Dani and Rahne get the spotlight, and to have someone actually talk about intersectionality. So much of what we've seen of Krakoan policies and culture has been this sort of imperious, top-down, macroview stuff (typical of my experience which Hickman) and this is a much needed chance to see what someone who's not an institutional player thinks.
My only problem with this issue is the choice of characters. Dani (and Rahne) - Yes please!
Silver Fox - Yawn. I'm sorry, but she's basically a continuity implant for Wolverine's backstory, and has never interested me.
Echo - Okay, but honestly I feel like the Hispanic part of her heritage has always been emphasized to the point where I didn't even remember she had an Indigenous part.
I'd have loved to see a Jason Strongbow story, given he's on the cover. Also, I'd have enjoyed seeing any of the various Red Wolves running around the Marvel Universe--there's like three all told. A Shaman/Snowbird/Talisman piece might have been nice. Black Crow, used as something other than a story mechanic for other characters. Heck, now that we -can- what about a James and John Proudstar teamup, together again for the very first time in modern continuity?
So... maybe a second volume of this wouldn't go amiss.

That's a story I really want to see. James idolized his big brother, but at this point he's older and far more experienced than John was when he passed. Got to be an interesting switch there.

Bottom line: If slash, feminism or anti-oppressive practice makes you react negatively, scans_daily is probably not for you.
